Framework's first eGPU connects laptop and desktop GPUs via OCuLink

Together with the Framework Laptop 13 Pro the manufacturer also announced the so-called OCuLink Dev Kit today. This is an eGPU solution that is primarily intended for the Framework Laptop 16, but should also be compatible with other devices with an OCuLink port. The system is modular and consists of four components.
Firstly, an OCuLink 8i cable, which can handle data rates of up to 128 GT/s and should therefore enable a significantly higher bandwidth than Thunderbolt 4 or USB 4, for example. Secondly, an OCuLink Expansion Bay Adapter, which is plugged into the Framework Laptop 16 to add a corresponding port to the manufacturer's gaming laptop.
Thirdly, a Graphics Module OCuLink Dock, which makes it possible to use the laptop GPUs of the Framework Laptop 16 as an eGPU. And fourthly, a PCIe OCuLink Dock, which makes it possible to connect conventional PCIe accessories, including standard desktop graphics cards. Customers can mix and match these components to create flexible setups.
Pricing and availability
Framework has not yet confirmed pricing and availability details for the OCuLink Dev Kit. More information on availability should be available shortly on the official product page. A suitable GPU module must be purchased separately - Framework charges $399 for the AMD Radeon RX 7700S and $699 for the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 laptop GPU. Alternatively, a standard desktop graphics card can also be used, such as an Nvidia GeForce RTX 5060 ($329 on Amazon).
