Fanatical: Strategy hit gets 95% discount, now $2.50 instead of $50
In XCOM 2, the alien regime ADVENT has seized control of Earth. As leader of the resistance, players must rebuild the covert XCOM organization, recruit soldiers and push back the invaders. Saving humanity requires tactical turn-based battles where every decision matters – one wrong move can cost a veteran soldier’s life and weaken the resistance. A permadeath mechanic forces players to replace fallen soldiers with fresh recruits. The game’s battles are praised for their strategic depth and high tension.
Players command squads of up to six soldiers, each from one of five classes. These include, for example, the melee-focused ranger, the tech-savvy specialist and the deadly sniper. Soldiers can rank up to level seven, unlocking new abilities at each stage. Outside of combat, players manage squads and upgrade their base, unlocking better gear and expanded recruitment options.
Exciting turn-based tactics, frustrating difficulty
The German gaming magazine GameStar praised XCOM 2 for its intense battles, tactical depth and atmospheric dystopian setting. However, it criticized the cumbersome menu navigation and unbalanced difficulty. Early in the campaign, strict time limits can make missions frustrating, while later on, stronger soldiers and better gear can make the game feel too easy. Despite these flaws, the positives outweigh the negatives, earning XCOM 2 a solid 88 points from GameStar.
Developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, XCOM 2 launched in February 2016. Since then, it has received over 70,000 Steam reviews, with 84% being positive. This is mirrored on Metacritic, where the game holds a Metascore of 84, while the user score sits slightly lower at 7.4.
95% discount on Fanatical
On Fanatical, XCOM 2 normally costs around $50, but until March 24, it's available at a 95% discount for under $2.50. The XCOM 2 Collection, which includes the base game, the War of the Chosen expansion and five smaller DLCs, is 93% off – dropping from $90 to around $7. Fanatical is a licensed reseller and buyers purchase a game key that can be activated on Steam.
