In The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, players step into the shoes of Geralt of Rivia, a seasoned monster hunter. Set in a dark fantasy world plagued by war and intrigue, Geralt embarks on a quest to find Ciri, a young woman prophesied to shape the world's destiny. Along the way, he faces not only ruthless humans but also terrifying creatures. Werewolves, for instance, are especially vulnerable to fire, while flying creatures must first be grounded with a crossbow or the right spell. Through alchemy, Geralt can brew potions to boost his damage or healing and his swords can be coated with special oils to increase their effectiveness against specific monsters. All of this adds impressive tactical depth and flexibility to The Witcher 3’s combat system, though the somewhat clunky mouse-and-keyboard controls are a common complaint among players. For most, a gamepad is the better choice.
Next-gen update brings graphics up to date
Released in May 2015, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is no longer a new game. To keep it up to date, developer CD PROJEKT RED launched a next-gen update in December 2022, introducing modern features like ray tracing, enhanced textures and more detailed environments. Available for free to all players, this update ensures that The Witcher 3 can still deliver stunning visuals nearly a decade after its original release.

On Metacritic, it boasts a Metascore of 93 and a user score of 9.1, reflecting similarly high praise.
In 2016, the German magazin GameStar reviewed the Game of the Year Edition (including all DLCs), highlighting the gripping story and vibrant open world while criticizing the somewhat one-dimensional antagonist and clunky PC controls. According to HowLongToBeat, completing just the main game can take around 100 hours. Including the Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions, total playtime can easily surpass 150 hours.
