Titanfall 2, developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts in 2016, is a fast-paced first-person shooter that combines fluid parkour mechanics with intense Titan battles. While the game offers a compelling single-player campaign, its main focus is on multiplayer, where speed and seamless transitions between pilot and Titan combat take center stage. Players can sprint across walls, double-jump and swing through maps using a grappling hook before calling in their Titans – massive mechs with unique abilities and weapons. There are six distinct Titan classes to choose from: Ion, armed with laser weapons and energy shields; Scorch, a fire-based powerhouse; Northstar, a sniper specialist; Ronin, an agile melee fighter; Tone, a missile expert; and Legion, a heavily armored juggernaut.
With a variety of game modes, Titanfall 2’s multiplayer stays fresh and exciting. In Attrition, a team deathmatch mode, AI soldiers join the battle alongside players. Bounty Hunt blends PvP and PvE, challenging teams to eliminate enemies, earn bounties and deposit them in safe zones before their rivals do. Hardpoint Domination revolves around capturing and defending key locations on the map. For those who prefer co-op, Frontier Defense lets four players team up against waves of AI enemies, using Titans and traps to build defensive strategies. Unlike its predecessor, Titanfall 2 also features a full-fledged single-player campaign, where players take on the role of militia soldier Jack Cooper. After an unexpected turn of events, he becomes the pilot of the BT-7274 combat Titan and must battle the enemy IMC faction.
Gripping campaign and varied multiplayer, but outdated graphics and flat story
The German gaming magazine GameStar took a close look at Titanfall 2. Despite being primarily a multiplayer shooter, the game impressed with its thrilling campaign, creative level design and diverse gameplay. However, the storyline was criticized as generic and lacking standout moments. According to GameStar, the multiplayer mode excels with its well-balanced mix of pilots and Titans, thoughtfully designed maps and varied game modes. A major plus is that all maps and weapons are available for free, as the game has no paid DLCs. In the end, GameStar awarded Titanfall 2 an 87% rating. While visually appealing, the game built on the Source engine no longer feels fully up to date graphically.
On Metacritic, Titanfall 2 holds a Metascore of 86 and a User Score of 8.5. The game has also received over 220,000 reviews on Steam, with an impressive 95% being positive. According to SteamDB, Titanfall 2 still sees more than 3,000 concurrent players on a regular basis. While matchmaking times can sometimes be longer, there are generally enough players to find multiplayer matches.
