Eve Weather is now compatible with Matter
Eve Systems has launched a Matter-supported version of its smart weather station. The wall-mounted E-ink display now integrates seamlessly across smart home ecosystems such as Google Home, Apple HomeKit, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings, allowing for remote control and access to measured weather trends. The expectation is that Matter inclusion will make it easier for smart home owners to implement “smarter automations”, such as lighting a lamp in frosty weather, or turning on the humidifier when necessary.
Like much of Eve’s smart home offerings, earlier versions of Eve Weather – currently discounted on Amazon – were primarily HomeKit-only gadgets. However, Matter support is not restricted to new Eve Weather stations. Eve Systems maintains – via TechRadar – that older devices will still receive Matter support via an OTA firmware update, as long as they were purchased after 2021, when Eve switched from Bluetooth to the Thread protocol for its weather stations.
Thread, the highly efficient networking protocol designed for smart home devices, has been included with most connected gadgets from Eve as far back as Eve Motion – which has since received Matter support. Eve continues to lead the Matter crusade, yet the company appears to be playing favorites: as at the time of writing, only households on Apple HomeKit can access peculiar features such as barometric pressure and review of previous weather trends. This functionality is only available via the Eve app, which remains iOS-only, despite unrelenting promises of an Android app in the pipeline.
Due to the compatibility of Eve Weather with Thread, it can communicate with other Matter-compatible Thread devices even in the absence of internet connectivity. However, Eve Weather will require a Thread border router such as the Amazon Echo Dot (4th generation or higher) to allow remote access via the app or voice commands. Buy it on Amazon.
