Former Toshiba laptop division Dynabook (now owned by Sharp) recently announced the October launch of its new G / GS lineup of lightweight ultrabooks. The Dynabook G-series includes the G8 and G6 premium models, while the GS5 is designed for young individuals. These 13.3-inch models are among the lightest produced by Dynbook to date, with a 17.7 mm profile and total weight of 849 g (1.87 lbs).
Despite the light design, Dynabook made sure the chassis is sturdy enough to respect US DoD MIL standards. Color options include Nebula Black and Celeste Blue.
The new models are equipped with Intel’s Meteor Lake-U processors. As the top-of-the-line model, the G8 is the only one to feature the Core Ultra 7 155U, whereas the G6 and the GS5 are powered by the Core Ultra 5 125U. All three models come with 16 GB DDR5X-6400 RAM. On the storage side, the G8 and G6 both feature a 512 GB PCIe 4.0 SSD, but the GS5 is only equipped with a 256 GB model. These can be easily upgraded if needed.
Given the ultrabook form-factor, the 13.3-inch displays only support a maximum resolution of 1920 x 1200 with a wide view angle TFT panel that supports an unspecified “high color purity” gamut.
For the G8 and G6 models, Dynabook offers security features like facial recognition through an IR sensor in the 1080p webcam, TPM chip, BIOS password and Kensingnton lock. The GS5 drops facial recognition IR sensor for a fingerprint sensor.
Port selection is generous for the smaller size and features a 2x Thunderbolt 4, 2x USB-A 3.2 Gen 1 ports , a microSD card reader, HDMI video out, audio jack and a 1 GbE jack. Wireless connectivity is ensured via a Wi-FI 6E + BT 5.3 card.
All models integrate the same battery with unspecified wattage, but Dynabook mentions that it is supposed to last 11 hours during YouTube video playback and 28 hours in idle mode.
Pricing has not yet been revealed and the models will first be available this October in Japan. Global variants would most likely launch next year.
