Doom running on seemingly everything that has some sort of a compute-capable chip inside is hardly a matter of surprise. After all, when the famous game first hit the scene in 1993, it ran on processors such as the Intel i486, co-designed by none other than Pat Gelsinger, which was clocked at around 50 MHz. Modern hardware is an order of magnitude faster, allowing the game to run on almost anything in the 21st century.
Thanks to the efforts of a modder, the latest innocuous gadget to run Doom is an Anker Prime GaN fast-charger. This charger in question is a particularly high-end variant, featuring a 2.26-inch display and a chip that is powerful enough to run Doom. Of course, the experience is not particularly amazing, partly thanks to the tiny display, but it is nevertheless a ton of fun seeing a video game run on a desk charger, of all things.
As pointed out by the modder, Aaron Christophel, the Anker Prime charger sports a pretty powerful ARM SoC, the Synwit AWM34S, which happens to be clocked way higher than the Intel i486 that we discussed previously, and also sports 8 MB of SDRAM. The rotary dial situated on the left side of the power bank does pretty well as a controller, converting the Prime charger into a not-very-fun gaming console.
Of course, while the Anker Prime charger may not be the best Doom console that money can buy, it sure is a pretty decent charger that boasts a peak output of 250 watts, and a total of six output ports. The product is currently available for $139 on Amazon, for those interested.
