Details of Samsung Galaxy S21, S21+, and S21 Ultra camera hardware revealed
Samsung finally unveiled its latest lineup of premium phones a few days ago. While it appears that the company is solidly giving priority to the S21 Ultra over the regular S21 and S21 Plus, all three phones still feature impressive camera hardware, albeit with one being quite a bit more impressive than the others.
Starting with the Galaxy S21 and S21 Plus, the phones use camera hardware identical to last year's S20 and S20+. That means the main camera is a reappearance of the 12 MP Sony IMX555. The ultra-wide-angle camera is also a 12 MP sensor but the Sony IMX563, not the S5K2LA from the S20 series. The zoom camera remains the 64 MP GW2 that was on the S20. Similarly, the zoom on offer here is essentially digital. The 10 MP selfie camera is the same IMX374 from last year and the year before.
Things are more interesting with the S21 Ultra. The main 108 MP camera isn't the same as the S20 Ultra's; it's the S5KHM3, not the HM1 that was on last year's phone. The ultra-wide-angle shooter is the same as on the S21 and S21 Plus—the IMX563. The two telephoto cameras use the same 10 MP S5K3J1. That should be an upgrade on the 48 MP IMX586 used on the S20 Ultra. At the front is the 40 MP S5KGH1, likely the same sensor on the S20 Ultra.
All three phones use LPDDR5 RAM and UFS 3.1 storage made by Samsung. The in-display fingerprint reader—with model number "Qualcomm QBT2608"—finally gets an upgrade after Samsung used the same hardware on all its flagship phones from the S10 to the Note 20 Ultra.
