The base configuration ships with the Core i5-12500H, integrated UHD Graphics, 1200p display, 256 GB SSD, and just 8 GB of expandable DDR5 RAM. This year will be a relatively minor update as the chassis design is still rather new all things considered.
Alder Lake Laptop Launch XPS

Much like the recent 15.6-inch XPS 15 9520 refresh, Dell has now refreshed its larger 17-inch XPS 17 to include the same Intel 12th gen Core i5-12500H, Core i7-12700H, and unlocked Core i9-12900HK options. The new XPS 17 9720 is otherwise visually identical to last year's XPS 17 9710 meaning that the changes are all under the hood.

RAM has been upgraded from DDR4 to DDR5 while the two PCIe4 x4 storage bays, 1200p or 2400p display, and 60 W GeForce RTX 3060 remain the same as on the XPS 17 9710. Thus, buyers who know they can fully exploit the new Intel CPUs will find the most value out of the XPS 17 9720 as any other differences between it and the XPS 17 9710 should be relatively minor.
