Dell's largest mobile workstation focuses on not just the fastest CPUs and GPUs available, but also new RAM options beyond SODIMM for both improved performance and higher capacities than normal.

Dell boasted about the advantages of CAMM several years ago and while the vast majority of laptops continue to use the older SODIMM standard, some of Dell's most powerful models have been shipping with CAMM almost like a test bed for the new memory. The Dell Pro Max 18 Plus or Pro Max 16 Plus mobile workstations, for example, can be configured with either SODIMM or CAMM depending on user preferences.

When configured with traditional DDR5 SODIMM RAM, the Dell Pro Max 18 Plus can support up to 96 GB (2x 48 GB) of dual-channel DDR5-6400 memory which is fairly typical of high-end gaming laptops or workstations. When configured with CAMM2, however, faster capacities and speeds are available at up to 128 GB dual-channel and 7200 MT/s, respectively. Most laptops with traditional SODIMM RAM would run in the 4800 to 5600 MT/s range in comparison especially as capacity increases to 64 GB or beyond.

At the extreme level, Dell Pro Max 18 owners can configure up to 256 GB of CAMM2 RAM albeit with a slower memory performance of 4400 MT/s as it would be limited to single-channel only. Some users may prefer the higher capacity over speed as most AI datasets and training scenarios are memory-intensive.
