Does the Dell Precision 15 3510 beat the Lenovo ThinkPad P50? That depends what your priorities are. Dell is offering much better battery life, and a more generous warranty, but Lenovo has the better display quality, and the better graphics card. The P50 also looks and feels more worthy of its price tag, while the Dell makes a few missteps, like the strange bezel-within-a-bezel display. If you’re in the market for a business-class laptop, the Dell Precision 15 3510 is well worth considering. It’s not cheap, and it’s not pretty, but it’s powerful and offers great battery life.

Here's the most significant of the 3510's results—more than a full workday of unplugged life, making it a formidable choice for carrying large datasets or diagrams into the field or to the conference room. The battery-guzzling 4K displays of the two Xeon machines leave them at the back of the pack. That said, we don't believe battery life tips the scales for mobile workstations as much as it does for, say, ultrabooks—and one of the Precision 15 3000's other main attractions leaves us puzzled, because workstation buyers as a rule don't care about low purchase price as much as all-out performance, 24/7 uptime, and other responses to the demands of the job.

The Precision 3510's keyboard could also be better. It offers a generous 2.2 millimeters of key travel — deeper than the 1.5 mm we consider the minimum for a work laptop — but its keys feel a bit too stiff to make marathon typing sessions as comfortable as they could be.

The Dell Precision 3510 is a powerful, capable workstation with a vivid display and a battery that will last through the workday. It's ideal for designers, architects and engineers who can deal with its bulk and heating issues. If you want a better keyboard, consider the Lenovo ThinkPad P50 (starting at $839), but note that it suffers from a lackluster screen despite its 4K resolution.

If you are reading this review, you are probably already considering this laptop as your next mobile workstation and you just need the confirmation. Apparently, you are into this line of work (engineering, 3D modeling, CGI animations, etc.) so you need the special hardware to work with CAD, DCC and CGI applications. Well, we are happy to report that Dell’s Precision 15 3520 is a nice entry-level 15-inch workstation that will get the work done, although entry-level doesn’t mean affordable. Quite the opposite.

Dell Precision 3520-N0KF3
The Dell Precision 3520-N0KF3 is a mobile workstation with high performance and an enhanced design. The design of the Precision 3520 is similar to the modern Dell Latitude series and this is understandable. Both lines fall into the business category and it make sense to share the same design. The chassis is all-black, sturdy and simple with very compact dimensions and a surprisingly low weight of about 2.23 kg. The lid is made of a sturdy plastic material with a slightly rubberized surface providing excellent grip, but fingerprints and smudges remain visible. The center of the lid of the Dell logo appears slightly flexible only under moderate to high pressure, but ripples do not appear on the LCD screen when the back of the cover is pressed. The well-designed metal hinges leave no room for swing and rocking. The only complaint to the hinges is that they are too tight and user have no choice but to use both hands for opening the laptop. The laptop offers a standard keyboard layout with slightly concave keys, well-integrated LED backlight, long key stroke, and satisfying snapping resistance. In the middle of the keyboard, users will find the Dell version of the TrackPoint. The touchpad is ideal. The sliding surface is good, the mouse buttons are well positioned with a long stroke and pleasant and soft tangible resistance. The Precision 3520 collects massive power under the hood thanks to the Intel Core i5-7440HQ, a slightly more powerful version of Core i5 -7300HQ, plus all Intel vPro features that are essential for some business users, the Nvidia Quadro M620 processor (2 GB GDDR5), a large battery with a capacity of 68 Wh, 16 GB of DDR4-2400 RAM and support of M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD drives. In practice, this is all users need from a mobile workstation. The Dell Precision 3520's display has a Full HD resolution and an IPS matrix. It is called LG Display 156WF6. Its diagonal is 15.6-inch (39.62 cm) and the resolution is 1920 x 1080 pixels. The aspect ratio is 16: 9, the pixel density is 142 inch, the dot pitch is 0.18 mm. The Dell Precision 3520 has comfortable viewing angles too. If a user is planning to use the machine without an external display, the Full HD IPS version is pretty good and suitable for office work, gaming, multimedia, and web browsing. The relative thin edges (25 mm) provide all the necessary ports. On the left, users will find an USB Type-C 3.1 connector supporting Thunderbolt 3, an SD card reader, and a standard USB 3.0 port. On the right, there are a SIM card slot, a 3.5 mm audio jack, another USB 3.0 port and, quite surprisingly, VGA for an external monitor. The rear side provides an RJ-45 for LAN connectivity, HDMI, another USB 3.0 port and the power-in. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Furthermore, Precision 3540 has one of the best keyboards found on laptops, we ever tested. All-in-all there are almost no drawbacks to this thing, apart from the pricing. Plus the fact that Dell is offering a “mobile workstation” with 4GB of RAM as a standard on their Web site. If you want to check alternatives to this device, see the Lenovo ThinkPad P53s and the HP ZBook 15u G6.

In terms of the overall user experience and the I/O ports, it’s actually quite solid. That extra Thunderbolt 3 port at the left side is a huge plus. For the hardware, I really recommend getting a configuration with a better CPU. This Intel Core i5-8365U processor is just not sufficient for rendering work. Maybe Dell should explore AMD’s Ryzen processors as an alternative? They offer better base clocks with similar boost clock speeds. Looking at the market now, AMD-powered laptops are much lower in price, yet still with 4 cores and 8 threads.

The Precision 3551 is one of the least expensive mobile workstations you can find with a vPro-enabled 10th gen Intel Core i9 CPU. Ports and features are commendable so long as you're okay with the dull visual design.
Source: PC Mag Archive.org version
Suitably configured, the Precision 3551 can be a fine entry-level workstation, but besides sending a suboptimal AC adapter with our test unit, Dell arguably sent the wrong processor—unless you're crunching giant datasets, the Core i9 is an odd match for a low-end display, and it hikes the price in the process. Dell's next-level-up Precision 5550, equipped with a slightly more modest Core i7-10750H CPU and a superior Quadro T2000 graphics chip, actually costs $103 less than the 3551 here (and it runs its CPU at 45 watts, to give you all the speed you paid for).

Dell’s latest Precision 15 3560 is a bit underwhelming because of its lack of identity. Ultimately, it is a rebrander Latitude 15 5520, which is generally not bad, if it offered something exclusive. Probably the only thing that we found is different, is the boost ideology of the processor. Instead of throttling the CPU down to 17W, like the Latitude we just mentioned, the Precision stabilizes at 21W under extreme workload scenarios.

One thing we want to mention before we put everything into perspective is that there are better devices for 3D manipulation, especially if you can make use of the CUDA cores. Indeed, having a professional-grade graphics card is great, but this one is on the level of a GTX 1650, so it is clearly one of the lowest spec proper GPUs out there. Perhaps people using workstations will agree – having slots for RAM and storage is pretty important in the industry. Well, yes, you don’t get ECC memory support, but the general idea of having a high amount of memory and storage is refreshing. By the way, let’s not forget the optional IR face recognition, fingerprint reader, and LTE connectivity you can get. We are waiting to get the HP ZBook Power G8, and Lenovo ThinkPad P15v Gen 2 in our office, so stay tuned for direct comparisons between them in the near future.

At the end of the day, there are a couple of things we would like to address. First – it is about time manufacturers ditch the idea of even thinking to offer a 768p TN panel, regardless if we’re talking about a budget notebook or a mobile workstation like the Precision 15 3570. Secondly, we would like to praise Dell for its environment-conscious policies. Stuff like this can quickly add up and make a huge change for the world. As a workstation, the laptop seems pretty decent. Its pro-grade graphics card is certified to work with a wide variety of professional software – whether it is for civil engineering, architecture, 3D modeling, or else. And if you happen to own the RTX A500 – you will get ray tracing support on a hardware level, which is fantastic. Dell Precision 15 3570’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. It’s good to see that its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. However, the color coverage of 53% of the sRGB gamut, means that the image looks a bit dull.

Once again we have experienced Dell’s ultimate delivery of a professional notebook, and just when we thought that this was one of the best devices for its money, they butchered the battery life. It has 4 hours of Web browsing and 5 hours of video playback. No offense, but that’s pathetic. Who puts a 42Wh battery on a workstation? Let’s remind you that our configuration lacks a dedicated GPU. And some gaming laptops with behemoth hardware actually last for more than 10 hours of Web browsing. Dell Precision 15 3580’s IPS panel has a Full HD resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Moreover, the backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment. Unfortunately, the color coverage is limited (52% of sRGB). Yes, the upgradeability is good, and the laptop is pretty easy to get inside of. Its port selection is on point, while the input devices are great.

If you don’t need a hardcore workstation with top-tier hardware but looking for a workhorse that offers comfort, snappiness, and capable cooling, the Dell Precision 15 3590 could be on your shortlist. The build quality isn’t perfect but it’s above the average levels. The main downside here is that the lid can’t be opened with one hand. The touchpad isn’t impressive but the keyboard is thanks to its big grippy keycaps with long travel. The upgradability looks good – a pair of DDR5 SODIMMs, two Gen 4 NVMe slots, and a WWAN slot. The port selection is also modern – four USB ports, an HDMI 2.1 plus a MicroSD reader. It’s worth noting that you can open the bottom panel pretty easily which can be important for some of you.

另一方面,快速 2230 NVMe(512GB SK Hynix BC901)在负载情况下会发热。
Positive: Silent system; nice design; decent built quality; comfortable keyboard; good hardware; long battery life; nice webcam; fast fingerprint sensor; powerful processor; 512GB SSD storage. Negative: Overheats while using; expensive.

If you are looking for a snappy business device that is light and fast at the same time, the Dell Precision 14 3490 is one of the good options on the market. The machine boasts a comfortable keyboard and a decently-sized cooling system with a single fan that is almost quiet when the CPU is loaded at max. Its clocks in short and medium loads are high and remain decent in longer stress which is a good result for a 14-incher especially considering the low noise.

Positive: Silent system; comfortable keyboard; great connectivity; very long battery life; nice webcam; powerful processor. Negative: Overheats while using; expensive.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

73.81%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
