A New Strand in Anime Form
At its Beyond the Strand anniversary event on September 23, Kojima Productions surprised fans with Death Stranding: Mosquito, an anime project expanding the surreal world first introduced in 2019’s Death Stranding.
Produced by ABC Animation Studio, the anime will be directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto (Blood Chronicle) and written by Aaron Guzikowski (Prisoners, Raised by Wolves). While details remain scarce, the teaser trailer hinted at wholly original stories beyond Sam Porter Bridges’ journey.
Teaser Highlights
The brief preview featured desolate landscapes, cryptic iconography, and a standout long action take. In it, the apparent protagonist, sporting a sick (or sickly) tar mask on his lower face, appears to repatriate himself into the world of the living to protect a BT-like dog, before engaging in a meticulously choreographed, hand-to-hand fight with a hostile porter, showcasing buttery smooth animation and cinematic intensity rarely seen in game-to-anime adaptations. The action-packed fisticuff action may come as a surprise to porters who made their journey through Death Stranding and Death Stranding 2 as pacifists.
More to Come
Kojima hinted that the project will explore “a different kind of strand,” suggesting new characters and experimental narratives. No release date was given, but further details are expected later in 2025. This reveal, among updates on the upcoming Death Stranding movie, Kojima's new espionage thriller, Physint, and the exciting first trailer drop of OD: Knock, co-created by Jordan Peele, rounded out a night full of surprises for Kojima Productions’ 10th anniversary.
