Hideo Kojima, the creative mind behind the acclaimed Death Stranding and Metal Gear franchises, is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the gaming industry. After leaving Konami, the 60-year-old founded his own studio, Kojima Productions, which celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. To mark the occasion, Kojima has announced a new AR game in collaboration with Niantic, the creators of Pokémon GO.
A first trailer, released under the working title A New Dawn, shows players using AR glasses to explore real-world locations such as cities, beaches and deserts. They interact with virtual elements seemingly tied to physical objects. Some scenes hint at gameplay without a smartphone, and one character appears to wear glasses resembling AR devices like the Meta Ray-Ban Display. However, it remains unclear whether AR glasses will be officially supported.
The official Niantic Spatial blog describes the collaboration as a technology partnership designed to merge Kojima’s storytelling with Niantic’s geospatial AI, bringing narratives to life in the real world. While the exact gameplay of A New Dawn remains under wraps, Niantic’s involvement strongly suggests that location-based mechanics – similar to those in Pokémon GO or Ingress – will play a central role.
Insider Gaming describes the concept as “Death Stranding in the real world.” If A New Dawn follows that path, it could go beyond location exploration or task completion, focusing instead on connecting players with one another. The mysterious second character appearing at the end of the trailer adds to this speculation. Concrete details about gameplay and a release date remain unknown.
