DaVinci Resolve 21 introduces a photo mode.
DaVinci Resolve was previously marketed primarily as professional video editing software with first-class tools for adjusting colors. From now on, the free app also offers a photo mode, and thus also competes with Adobe Lightroom and Capture One Pro.

Photographers who are tired of subscribing to Adobe Lightroom now have a new, free option. DaVinci Resolve version 21 includes a photo mode that allows users to manage large photo libraries, including by sorting images into albums, tagging and rating them, while an AI search is designed to help locate photos with specific content.

The software supports the RAW files of selected cameras from Canon, Sony, Nikon and Fujifilm - it is hardly surprising that the list of supported cameras in the first version is not quite as extensive as that of the market leaders. Nevertheless, DaVinci Resolve 21 also supports ProRAW photos from an Apple iPhone ($819 on Amazon) as well as JPEG and HEIC files.

With selected Canon and Sony cameras, tethering is even possible, i.e. photos can be transferred directly after shooting when the camera is connected, while camera settings can be adjusted in DaVinci Resolve and the live image from the camera can be displayed. Most of DaVinci Resolve's video tools are also available in photo mode, including the option to create masks using AI, adjust the depth of field using artificial intelligence, change a person's age using AI and adjust colors.

Pricing and availability

DaVinci Resolve 21 can be downloaded free of charge from the Blackmagic Design website, although the latest version is currently still being distributed as a public beta, so bugs cannot be ruled out. Selected features require the purchase of a DaVinci Resolve Studio license for $295, including lens distortion correction, advanced AI noise reduction and advanced GPU acceleration.
