DJI has not released any new consumer drones for a while, having introduced a spate of models towards the end of last year. Instead, the company has recent focused on expanding its gimbal portfolio, whether that be the RS 4 Mini or the cheaper Osmo Mobile 7 and Osmo Mobile 7P (curr. $149 on Amazon). Leakers continue to reveal new details about the Mavic 4 Pro though, which is still without a firm launch date.
Initially, it seemed probable that DJI would kick off the Mavic 4 series with the cheaper Mavic 4 before moving on to the Mavic 4 Pro. The volume of recent Mavic 4 Pro leaks and the absence of Mavic 4 equivalents indicates that DJI may only be preparing one high-end drone release for the time being. For example, images of Mavic 4 Pro shells recently turned up online. Various sources have since posted a separate image of the same drone engaged in pre-release testing next to a Mavic 3 Pro.
Now, Jasper Ellens has revealed that DJI will use the Mavic 4 Pro to showcase a new sensor built into at least one of the drone's propeller arms. For context, Mavic 3 series drones leverage cameras in their propeller arms to maximise obstacle avoidance accuracy.
The Mavic 4 Pro appears to feature these too, at the edge of each propeller arm. Hence, we suspect the large black area circled in the image below relates to something else. As it stands, Ellens believes that this area could be for infrared (IR) or LiDAR purposes, given its position. No further information about its intended use is known at this time, though.
