Only a few days have passed since DJI released the Osmo Mobile 7 and Osmo Mobile 7P. Nonetheless, the company has now introduced the Ronin Series 4 Mini (RS 4 Mini) as a cheaper alternative to the existing RS 4 and RS 4 Pro. In other words, DJI has designed the RS 4 Mini for conventional cameras rather than for smartphones, which is the intended use case of the Osmo Mobile 7 and Osmo Mobile 7P (curr. $149 on Amazon).
DJI stresses that the RS 4 Mini is compatible with smartphones though, but only when paired with its phone holder accessory. For reference, the RS 4 Mini supports up to 2 kg payloads, despite its 890 g weight. Additionally, DJI boasts that its new compact gimbal delivers up to 13 hours of battery life, or 30% longer battery life than its direct predecessor.
The RS 4 Mini also supports DJI's 4th generation stabilisation technology, which it complements with a magnetic quick-release mount solution. The new RS Intelligent Tracking Module is another star of the show, which DJI restricts to its RS 4 Mini Combo package. According to DJI, the tracking module can follow a subject from up to 10 metres away thanks to ActiveTrack technology. The module combines this functionality with hand gesture support, as well as traditional button controls.
The RS 4 Mini starts at $369 with the gimbal itself, plus a quick-release plate and a mini tripod. Alternatively, the gimbal can be picked up for $459 with a briefcase handle and the RS Intelligent Tracking Module. as the RS Mini 4 Combo or for $478 in the 'Creator Combo' that adds a smartphone holder.
