Paramount is bringing Cyberpunk 2077 to the big screen with a live-action film set in the game’s dystopian universe. CD Projekt Red and veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura are attached to the project, which is still in the early stages, with no director, cast or release date announced.

Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action movie set in the universe of Cyberpunk 2077, expanding the franchise beyond games and animation. Producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the project alongside CD Projekt Red, the Polish studio that developed the game and holds the franchise rights, Deadline reports.

The movie is still in the early stages of development, and Paramount has yet to announce a director, cast, plot details or release date. It is also unclear whether the film will retell the story of Cyberpunk 2077 or tell a new story in the same universe.

The game takes place in Night City, a dystopian California metropolis. Cyberpunk 2077 follows V, a mercenary who becomes linked to the digital consciousness of Johnny Silverhand, a rebellious rockstar and terrorist. As Silverhand’s personality begins to overwrite V’s own, the pair confronts the powerful Arasaka Corporation while searching for a way to save V’s life. It remains unclear whether the movie will retell that story or introduce entirely new characters in the same setting.

The franchise previously moved beyond games with Netflix’s animated series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which helped revive interest in the setting and showed that Night City could work in another medium.

The game has become one of CD Projekt Red's biggest successes alongside The Witcher series. Released in 2020, Cyberpunk 2077 has sold more than 40 million copies worldwide, according to the report. Its Phantom Liberty expansion has sold 15 million copies.

Paramount is developing the Cyberpunk 2077 film as part of a broader push into video-game properties. The studio is also working on a Street Fighter movie with Legendary, while a Call of Duty film is in development with Peter Berg directing and co-writing the script with Taylor Sheridan.

Di Bonaventura has produced major franchise films including the Transformers and G.I. Joe series, making him an experienced producer for a large-scale adaptation.

For now, the Cyberpunk 2077 movie remains at an early stage, and it is still unclear when production could begin or when the film might reach theaters.
