CD Projekt RED and studio Trigger have announced that Cyberpunk: Edgerunners has officially been renewed for a second season. The news came about during the 2025 Anime Expo in Los Angeles, as CD Projekt RED took a dramatic turn from its previous stance that a follow-up was unlikely.
Pulling out all the stops, the creative team consists of showrunner Bartosz Sztybor, along with lead character designer Kanno Ichigo and Masahiko Otsuka, known for their work on the highly stylized sci-fi action film Promare. The new season, titled Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, will feature ten episodes in the dystopian, vibrant Night City. The adaptation will air on Netflix, though a release date has not yet been announced.
Sztybor dropped a few teasers during the announcement, saying that season 2 will be “sadder, but it will also be darker, more bloody, and more raw.” According to the official Cyberpunk website, “David is dead but Night City lives on.” This means that the story is moving on from the original Edgerunners gang, introducing new characters and storylines from the underbelly of Night City.
Cyberpunk Edgerunners premiered in September 2022 and received widespread acclaim in the anime and gaming communities. The anime adaptation scored 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The series caused a resurgence of interest in Cyberpunk 2077 among new and returning players. The studio also launched Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.6, dubbed the Edgerunners update, which introduced new side-gigs, weapons, and easter eggs from the anime adaptation.
This caused a surge in Cyberpunk 2077’s player count, which had previously dwindled. According to SteamDB, player counts skyrocketed to 85,000 in September 2022 and peaked at 136,000 players by the end of September.
