Currently in review: 14-inch laptop with Intel Wildcat for $449
Affordable laptops are currently very hard to get and when you are looking for a laptop with a price tag below $500, you mainly find used devices or Chromebooks. Chuwi now introduces the new UniBook, which wants to attract customers with a price tag of $449 and it is also positioned as a rival for Apple's MacBook Neo. This definitely works for the price, because you have to pay at least $690 for the Neo right now. We are currently in the review process of the Chuwi UniBook and will obviously check whether this is really a serious alternative.
A look at the spec sheet is surprising, because you get decent features for this price. In addition to the Intel Wildcat processor (Core 3 304) with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD storage, you also get a matte IPS screen, plenty of ports including Ethernet and a microSD-card reader, as well as an illuminated keyboard. The memory equipment is obviously an issue, even more so in combination with Windows 11 compared to macOS.
Our impression is pretty positive so far, because the device did not feel slow or sluggish during the installation and our benchmarks. Starting the Wildcat device or resume from sleep is very fast and performing everyday tasks like writing documents, mail or watching YouTube videos (also in 4K) is no problem at all, and the fan is very quiet. However, you can obviously not expect any miracles and extensive multi-tasking is obviously not possible, because Windows 11 already uses about 4-4.5 GB RAM while idling.
