CrowPanel ESP32: Budget E-Ink display brings Wi-Fi and smart home integration

The 5.79-inch CrowPanel ESP32 from manufacturer Elecrow promises broad utility at a modest price point. Listed directly by the vendor for $31.90, the unit features an E-Ink panel. While refresh rates are inherently slow, the technology offers low power consumption and remains readable under direct sunlight without backlighting. Resolution is specified at 272 × 792 pixels.
Functioning also as a development board, the system incorporates an ESP32-S3 microcontroller, allowing standalone operation without an external host controller. Potential use cases range from displaying local weather and custom messages to tracking stock values. Integrated Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 5 mean a wired data connection would not strictly be required. While the panel lacks touch input, control is provided via physical buttons and a rotary encoder. The display itself communicates via an SPI interface.
GPIO pins allow for the connection of external sensors and actuators, such as a temperature sensor. The board also includes a USB Type-C port, a microSD card slot, and a dedicated battery header, which would enable operation independent of an external power supply. Programming is supported via the Arduino IDE.
