Claude on CarPlay: five AI assistants in the car, but not Gemini

Claude's iPhone app has supported Apple CarPlay since early September. MacRumors and 9to5Mac reported the rollout on Sept. 4 and confirmed it on a car screen the same day. German site heise puts the release of the matching app version on Sunday. Anthropic said nothing about any of it.

That silence can be checked in three places. The release notes in Claude's help center end on Sept. 1 with Fable 5.1 and Mythos 5.1. A full-text search of the same help center for CarPlay returns no results. The App Store release note for version 1.260904.19 mentions only bug fixes and general improvements.

How Claude looks on the car screen

Tapping the app icon opens a start screen that offers a hands-free conversation. You can start a new chat or resume an earlier one from the list. Everything after that is voice controlled. The screen shows only whether Claude is listening or speaking, plus buttons to mute the microphone and to end the conversation.

The sparse layout is deliberate. Claude also picks the language on its own, so a German driver gets German answers without changing a setting.

What Apple blocks in the car

Apple lists voice assistants as a supported CarPlay category and calls them voice-based conversational apps in its developer documentation. The category has been open since iOS 26.4. Chatbots had no place on the dashboard before that, which is why Notebookcheck mostly covered signs of video playback in a parked car.

Providers cannot design their own car interface. Apple requires a specific template for voice control and approves each app individually through an entitlement. Two limits follow from that. Only Siri can be started with a wake word, so every other assistant needs a tap on its icon. None of them can operate vehicle or iPhone functions, because no interface exists for it. Anyone hoping to control the air conditioning with an AI assistant will keep waiting.

Gemini is the one that is missing

Claude makes five. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Grok arrived earlier, Meta AI a few days before Claude. One provider is missing from that list.

Apple opened the category in February, and the coverage at the time named ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini. Seven months later Google still has no CarPlay app for its assistant. There is a widget that starts voice mode, and a route through Google Maps that so far exists only in a code find from May. Android Auto is a different story, because Google has been rolling Gemini out broadly on that platform since April 2026. The gap is limited to Apple's car interface. Both heise and 9to5Mac expect the reworked Siri to arrive there this month with iOS 27, which would leave Gemini as the only major assistant outside CarPlay.

The cost of using it

The app is free, and Anthropic's own pricing table lists voice mode for the free plan as well. Whether the free plan restricts use in the car is not documented anywhere. Long conversations run into usage limits either way. Those limits reset on a rolling five-hour window, and paid plans add weekly caps on top. Notebookcheck reported a case where strangers used up other people's limits through shared access.

Pro costs $20 a month, or $17 a month with annual billing at $200 up front. Max starts at $100. Subscribing inside the App Store costs more, and heise puts that range between 22 and 299.99 euros a month. Which model belongs to which tier has become harder to follow since the last change, and the new flagship Fable 5.1 is absent from the Pro plan.

Little changes for the drive itself. Claude in the car listens and answers, and Apple allows nothing beyond that.
