Claude Cowork merges into chat, and there is no going back

Anthropic announced on Wednesday that Claude Cowork and ordinary chat are becoming one product. You used to decide where a task belonged before you started, and that choice is now gone. You describe the outcome you want, and Claude picks the tools for it, from a quick lookup to a report that keeps running in the cloud after you close your laptop.

How to tell whether your account has moved

The rollout is staged and starts on the Pro and Max plans, on the web, on the desktop and on mobile. Anthropic says in its help pages that even accounts on the same plan will see the change at different times. You do not have it yet if your message box still shows the Chat and Cowork options. There is no switch to flip either, because Anthropic moves the account for you.

The direction of travel matters more than the timing. You cannot return to the separate areas once your account has moved. Chats, tasks, projects, connectors and skills carry over, and older Cowork tasks still open the way they did. Team and Free plans follow later with no date attached. Enterprise administrators get at least 30 days of notice before anything changes for their organization.

Docs and Slides skip the free plan

Two tools are new. Claude Docs builds documents that you write together with Claude and with colleagues, with comments and a share link. Claude Slides drafts presentations that you can edit directly, present from inside Claude, or download as PowerPoint or PDF. Claude Design arrived in April as its own surface and now works inside any conversation. All three are in beta on the paid plans, which leaves the free account without them for now, and administrators decide when to switch them on inside a company. Anthropic keeps the paid boundary where it put it with Fable 5.1, a model the Pro plan also left out.

How much Claude decides on its own

The message box holds a permission setting. Manual is the default, so Claude asks before it takes an action and you approve each one. Auto lets it keep working, with automated safety checks running before it acts. The setting covers a whole conversation and you can change it whenever you want. Anthropic advises staying close for work with real consequences, such as sending messages or changing important files. Claude asks before it permanently deletes a file under either setting.

The gaps Anthropic lists itself

Adding content from GitHub is not supported in the new experience, and neither is branching a conversation from an earlier point. Incognito chats open in the previous interface and cannot create files or run code there. Search does not cover older Cowork tasks, which you still find by name among your recent conversations. The web search toggle is gone, because Claude now searches whenever the task calls for it. Anthropic also says openly that usage is measured slightly differently during the rollout for accounts that have the new experience and accounts that do not. Long jobs that search the web, run code and produce files use more of your limit than a quick question does. OpenAI moved in the other direction this week and reworked its Plus subscription.
