Claude Fable 5.1 is not included in your Pro subscription

Anthropic launched Claude Fable 5.1 on Monday and calls it the most advanced model for coding and knowledge work. Paying customers see it in the model picker right away, marked with a "New" badge. Whether you are actually allowed to use it depends on which subscription you pay for. On the most popular tier, the answer is no.

On Pro, Fable only runs for an extra fee

Anthropic's help article on the Fable models is blunt about this. On Pro plans and on standard seats of Team plans, Fable 5 and Fable 5.1 are not included in your plan's usage limits. Anyone who wants to use them there pays through usage credits, on top of the 20 dollars a month. When Fable 5 moved to that model in July, affected Pro customers received a one-time credit. For Fable 5.1 the help article states explicitly that there is no equivalent credit.

Free accounts do not get the model at all, since Fable is limited to paid plans.

On Max, you stop at half

At launch on Monday, Max customers opening claude.ai saw a notice window telling them Fable 5.1 was included for up to 50 percent of their Max allowance. That number appears neither in the announcement post nor on the pricing page. The help center explains it. On Max plans and on premium seats of Team and Enterprise plans, you may spend at most half of your weekly limit on Fable models without paying extra. After that you have two options, either continue with usage credits or switch back to a different model.

Anthropic clears up the obvious misreading in its own FAQ. This is not 50 percent on top. The Fable allowance comes out of the same weekly limit every other model draws from. The same article adds that Fable burns through that limit faster than the other Claude models. How painful an empty allowance gets when somebody else spends it became clear in late August, when Claude sessions were stolen.

On the web, Fable thinks less

One detail from the announcement fits that picture. Fable 5.1 defaults to the High effort level in Claude Code, but to Medium in Claude Cowork and on claude.ai. Anthropic's help article on effort levels gives the reason indirectly, because a higher setting produces more thorough answers, burns more tokens and gets you to your limit faster. So anyone working in the browser gets the model in a thriftier setting, and nobody points that out. You can change it through the model menu next to the send button. Turning thinking off is not possible on Fable 5.1, it runs at every effort level.

The price cut does not reach your subscription

Anthropic advertises typical workloads coming in around 25 percent cheaper, and heavily agentic ones up to 45 percent. Those numbers apply only to per-token billing, meaning the developer API. They come from cache reads, which cost 75 percent less and now sit at 0.25 dollars per million tokens. Base prices are unchanged at 10 dollars per million input tokens and 50 dollars per million output tokens. None of this changes the monthly price of a Pro or Max subscription.

What else changed

Fable 5.1 and the Mythos 5.1 released alongside it are the same model with different safeguards, according to Anthropic. Mythos stays restricted to two verification programs currently open to US organizations only. On Fable, Anthropic loosened the rules around cybersecurity. The model may now identify software vulnerabilities, but still may not build exploits. Claude Code users should see roughly 60 percent fewer interventions per session, and on harmless questions about biology and medicine the safeguards trigger 85 percent less often than at the launch of Fable 5.

Anyone on a Pro plan who still wants to try Fable 5.1 will have to buy usage credits. The alternatives are moving up to Max, or sticking with Opus 5, which remains part of the allowance.
