You don’t need to drop nearly a grand on an Apple Watch Ultra or a Garmin Fenix to get a reliable outdoor watch with serious environmental telemetry. The Casio ProTrek PRG270-1 is one of the best value propositions in the outdoor gear world, and you can grab it for even less thanks to this Black Friday deal.
Amazon has slashed the price of the Pro Trek PRG270-1 by a whopping 40%. You can pick it up for just $120 instead of $200 while stock lasts. At Casio.com, it is still listed at $200.
A serious outdoor watch for a budget price
The PRG270 is built around Casio’s Triple Sensor Version 3 tech, packing in an altimeter, barometer, and digital compass (ABC) into a surprisingly wearable chassis. According to Casio, the sensors are 95 percent smaller than previous generations while still delivering improved accuracy and energy efficiency. They can be easily accessed by large one-click side buttons.
Speaking of the sensors, the onboard barometer measures atmospheric pressure every two hours and lets you see the current pressure trends and pressure tendency graphically—essentially giving you a heads-up if a storm is rolling in.
The barometer measures the atmospheric pressure at two-hour intervals, a pressure tendency alarm that alerts you to sudden changes in atmospheric pressure—essentially giving you a heads-up if a storm is rolling in. Meanwhile, the altimeter uses the data gathered by the pressure sensor to determine the altitude at your current location and can store your cumulative ascent and descent, highest altitude and lowest altitude, and starting point data. You can also add the precise altitude data before starting your ascent to help the altimeter record even more accurate measurements.
There’s also a digital compass for navigational aid with Magnetic Declination Correction and Bearing Memory. The former allows you to calibrate the watch to true north (matching your map) rather than just magnetic north, while the latter lets you lock in a specific heading and displays it continuously at the 12 o’clock position so you can stay on course in low-visibility conditions like dense fog or heavy tree cover.
Tough Solar System is another highlight. Unlike an Apple Watch Ultra that needs a charger every few days, the PRG270 recharges via a solar panel on the face.
There are plenty of quality-of-life features here, too, like a dedicated sunrise/sunset display and an Auto Light Switch that illuminates the face when you flick your wrist in the dark.
