Casio's new limited edition digital watch comes with a stunning liquid metal stand

Casio has no shortage of watch collaborations under its belt, but its latest release is a little different. The company has teamed up with South Korean design label GRAGG, known for its quirky smartphone cases and accessories with a "liquid" aesthetic, for a limited-edition version of the humble LW-204 that ships with a sculptural display stand designed to live on your desk.

The watch, LW-204GRAGG-1BDF, is exclusive to South Korea and marks the first anniversary of Cafe Null Dosan and Casio Store Dosan in Seoul.

The limited edition model is based on the Casio LW-204-1B, and while it doesn't stray too far from the original, there are a couple of visual distinctions. The biggest visual change is the resin strap, which swaps the plain finish for engraved topographic contour lines inspired by GRAGG's "FROM NEW PLANET" design project. The band also features the GRAGG logo and the project’s tagline, LANDING FOR HUMANITY. Otherwise, the watch keeps its understated black-on-black look, complete with an inverted display, which is quite legible, and three pushers for controlling various watch functions.

However, the real star of the show isn't what goes on your wrist. It's where you rest it when you take it off at the end of the day. The collaboration includes a stunning custom-designed silver stand that looks like a pool of molten metal. The accessory is meant to give the watch "new value" beyond timekeeping by allowing it to double as a display piece for your desk or shelf.

Beyond the cosmetic changes, this is still very much the LW-204-1B. That means you get a lightweight 24-gram resin case measuring 38.9 × 35 × 9.4 mm, along with 50-meter water resistance, a 1/100-second stopwatch, a countdown timer, a multi-function alarm, an hourly time signal, an mber LED backlight, a full auto-calendar through 2039, and an estimated three-year battery life from a CR2016 battery.

The Casio x GRAGG LW-204GRAGG-1BDF is priced at KRW 129,000 (about $83) and will be available exclusively through the Casio Store Dosan in South Korea. That's a steep premium over the standard LW-204, but the bundled display stand—and the fact that it's a limited release—is clearly where most of the added value lies.
