Can AI really make a mediocre cell phone camera better?

The camera system of the Moto G87 is not entirely convincing despite AI.
The camera system of the Moto G87 is not entirely convincing despite AI.
How well does the Motorola Moto G87's 200 MP camera perform in everyday use - and can AI compensate for its weaknesses? We show where the smartphone excels and where it reaches its limits despite optimization.

The Motorola Moto G87 has a 200 MP main camera, which should deliver a lot of detail thanks to AI optimization.

It is OK in good lighting conditions, but shows its limits in poor conditions. The 8 MP ultra wide-angle and 32 MP front camera complete the set.

200 MP for maximum detail

The 200 MP sensor captures fine details that can be used in post-processing. In practice, this means that photos often remain sharp even when enlarged.

The AI optimization reduces noise quite effectively.

Limits in low light conditions

However, the camera shows weaknesses in low light. The images become grainy and lose sharpness, even though the AI does its best.

Compared to premium flagships such as the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, the Moto G87 falls far behind.

Everyday scenarios for the camera

In everyday use, the camera is well suited for quick snapshots and documentaries. The AI features help with object recognition and automatically optimize the settings.

However, the device is hardly suitable for professional shots or night shots.

Comparison with the competition

Compared to the similarly priced Samsung Galaxy A57, the Moto G87 usually shows a good level of detail in daylight. In low light conditions, however, the Samsung device has the advantage due to its larger sensor.

The Moto G87 offers a good 200 MP camera for everyday use, but it reaches its limits in low light conditions. For users who shoot a lot in daylight, it is a good choice, while night photographers should look for alternatives.
