Leica to unveil full-frame camera with 44 MP sensor soon

After rumors surfaced in March about the Leica SL3-P, LeicaRumors has now discovered new information about Leica's next-generation full-frame camera. According to this, the camera is expected to be launched in June 2026 for a recommended retail price of €5,900, and with a 44-megapixel full-frame sensor.
This places the Leica SL3-P clearly between the Leica SL3-S with a 24 MP sensor for €5,190 and the SL3 with a 60 MP sensor for €6,990. Technically, however, the Leica SL3-P is not based on either of the two older models in the SL3 series, but on the Panasonic Lumix S1RII ($2,997 on Amazon), which was launched in February 2025.

This is not unusual for Leica; for example, the Leica D-Lux 8 is also based on the Panasonic Lumix LX100 II. While Leica generally adapts the menu, controls and RAW files in DNG format to typical Leica cameras, buyers of the Leica SL3-P still pay a serious premium for a camera that should offer the same performance and image quality as the older Lumix S1RII.
According to LeicaRumors, the Leica SL3-P at least offers a higher resolution and faster autofocus than the Leica SL3-S, but the video performance is said to be worse, meaning that the camera is primarily aimed at photographers. The operating concept is said to be more reminiscent of Panasonic cameras than Leica cameras. If these rumors are correct, it remains to be seen how Leica can justify the premium price compared to the Panasonic Lumix S1RII.
