From all available information, Xiaomi is set to equip all flagships in the Xiaomi 12 series with 50 MP main cameras, finally ditching the 108 MP camera in the process. All 50 MP sensors aren't built equally, though, and Xiaomi has now revealed the differences between the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro's 50 MP cameras.
The Xiaomi 12 Pro will be equipped with a rather premium sensor. The more expensive phone will get Sony's IMX707, a variant of the IMX700 used on the Huawei P40 Pro and Mate 40 Pro. The IMX707 is a 1/1.28-inch sensor with Dual-PD focus and 2.44μm pixels after binning.
The vanilla Xiaomi 12, on the other hand, gets a much weaker sensor. The Xiaomi 12 will apparently sport the 50 MP IMX766. Used on phones like the OnePlus Nord 2, the IMX766 has slowly become the mid-range sensor of choice, so it's a bit disappointing to see it on what should be a flagship phone. At 1/1.56", it's a smaller sensor than the 1/1.33" ISOCELL HMX on the Mi 10 and Mi 11. Both the Xiaomi 12 and Xiaomi 12 Pro are expected to sport 32 MP selfie cameras.
