The long-awaited successor of the original Chromebook Flip is now official as a convertible with a 360 degree hinge and a touchscreen display that uses a Skylake processor and starts at $499 USD.

Asus Chromebook Flip launched as a quite special Chrome OS-powered portable, offering both tablet and laptop functionality, all inside a light and compact build. However, given its low price, compromises had to be made, so the original Chromebook Flip only had a rather slow processor, next to a low-resolution display and barely enough storage space. Now, its successor arrives to fix those shortcomings.

Asus Chromebook Flip 2/C302CA has been in the rumor mill for a long time, also surfacing apparently by mistake on major retail websites in two occasions. Now, Asus has silently added it to its website. These are the specs and features highlighted by the official product page:

  • Processor: Intel Core m3 6Y30 or Core m7 6Y75 options
  • Memory/Storage: 4 GB or 8 GB RAM; 32 GB, 64 GB, or 128 GB eMMC internal storage and microSD slot
  • Display: 12.5-inch 10-point multitouch with 1,920X1,080 pixels
  • Camera: 720p webcam
  • Connectivity: WiFi 802.11 ac, Bluetooth 4.0, 2XUSB 3.1 Type-C
  • Weight: 2.6 pounds
  • Battery/Autonomy: 39 Wh; up to 10 hours

In addition to the above, the new Chromebook Flip also features a full-size one-piece illuminated chiclet keyboard with 1.4 mm key travel and minimal key float, as well as a generous touchpad with a palmr rejection feature that counters unintentional cursor movement caused by palm contact.

Since this convertible has recently surfaced on Best Buy, we will probably see it available for purchase later this month. The starting price is expected to remain the same as previously spotted - $499.99 USD.
