Reviews for the Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate
If you don't mind not having a Snapdragon processor, Asus' ROG Phone 6D or 6D Ultimate may be an interesting alternative for mobile gamers. The slimmed-down phones are equipped with a MediaTek SoC. But are they a really good choice for real gamers?

ROG Phone 6D Ultimate lives up to its moniker – this is the ultimate gaming smartphone thanks to its large, responsive display, superfast performance, top notch cooling system and excellent battery life.

The Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate is another unapologetically niche phone with a laserlike focus on gaming performance. Like the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro, it excels in all the ways that matter, with a big, responsive display, top-tier performance, and a long-lasting battery. Asus’s bundled-in cooling fan ramps up the performance factor further, as well as adding useful physical gaming controls. The camera isn’t the best, which is par for the course in a gaming phone, but even here, Asus has managed to include a perfectly decent main sensor. The trouble with the 6D Ultimate is that pretty much everything I just said about the phone was also true of the 6 Pro. The only differences are a new cooling port, accessed through the fan, which is fairly superfluous in practical terms, and a new processor that works out to be equal to the 6 Pro’s, on balance. It’s also far more difficult to justify a purchase of the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate following the launch of the newer ROG Phone 7 Ultimate, which flaunts a faster performance. But I’m expecting the 6D Ultimate to get a significant price drop, which should make it a far more alluring gaming phone option.

The Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate smartphone is the new king in the gaming-centric smartphone range. There isn’t a single device that can provide these diverse gameplay features and offers precise cooling attributes at the same time. It’s a complete deal for any gamer who can afford this phone. But if you are looking for a low-budget gaming phone, we would suggest checking out the Asus ROG Phone 6D. Though, ROG Phone 6D might be lacking in some departments such as new features and more storage. But specs-wise, the performance level is equivalent and it cost almost half of the original price of the Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate smartphone. Yet, it won’t have AeroActive cooling air vent 6 inside the phone. Lastly, there are a handful of phones that can fit as alternative options, one of them is ZTE Nubia Red Magic 7S Pro which holds similar worth with exciting specs.

The Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate’s inherent similarity to the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro makes it one of the very best gaming phones on the market by default. It doesn’t offer any meaningful progress over its recent predecessor, and the higher price tag is a bit of a put-off, but it comfortably retains the brand’s apex predator position within the gaming phone market.

The ROG Phone 6D Ultimate justifies its name with an array of top specs and features. The Dimensity 9000+ is every bit as good as the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 that powers the 6 Pro. That applies to both performance and power efficiency, with battery life another real highlight. When combined with the large, 165Hz display, the gaming experience is among the best you’ll find on any mobile device – provided you’re happy with Android apps. When the phone inevitably starts getting warm, you can connect the included fan and make use of the 6D Ultimate’s new cooling portal. However, the latter will only be beneficial for long gaming sessions. It’s also a big, bulky phone, and that only gets worse when you connect the cooler. But despite the high price tag, it may still tempt avid mobile gamers looking for the absolute best experience.

What makes the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate special, is pretty much the same as what has made any other ROG Phone special: the multimedia experience. It's big and bold, but with its large, excellent display combined with the best stereo speakers we've ever heard on a phone, it's fantastic for gaming and consuming media on.

Having used this device, there’s no denying that it’s powerful. The MediaTek Dimensity 9000 Plus is really powerful in the computational department, but the GPU is where it seems to falter in comparison to the competition. I was surprised at how much this device struggled with The Simpsons: Hit & Run when I’ve had nothing but good experiences previously with this generation of chipsets. However, it did a great job with Genshin Impact. Whether it’s Asus’ implementation or the chipset itself I’m not sure, but nevertheless, it’s hard to say that this phone lives up to the “Ultimate” moniker. If anything, I feel like this phone should have been posited as an alternative edition of the 6 Pro, kind of like how the OPPO Find X5 Pro Dimensity Edition launched in China. “Ultimate” implies better when I think it’s more of a sidegrade between some of the downgrades and upgrades. There are benefits to both devices. Superior battery life and emulation performance go to the Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1, whereas the Dimensity 9000 Plus is an arguably more powerful chipset overall thanks to the beefed-up CPU and nearly-on-par GPU.

The Asus ROG Phone 6D Ultimate is clearly all-in when it comes to attracting gamers, which is especially evident in the high-performance internals (and their associated cooling system), along with the high-spec screen that even boasts a 165Hz refresh rate. From our early impressions, these have all functioned rather well, although it’s too soon for us to give a final verdict. However, I will also be keeping a keen eye on how some of the gaming-adjacent features stack up; for instance, whether the camera is worthy of such an expensive device, and how intuitive the software will be to use for all purposes. We were certainly impressed with the Asus ROG Phone 6 Pro, so I am hoping that this highly similar handset can confidently follow in its footsteps.

The ASUS ROG Phone 6D Ultimate is made for hardcore gamers in the Philippines with the incredible performance the Dimensity 9000+ has to offer. However, we’re wary of its pricing and is a direct competitor to the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 version of the ROG Phone 6.

So, this is the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate… as powerful, as ridiculously overkill as you might expect. Is it better than the ROG Phone 6 Pro? We kind of… don’t feel like it is. It’s just as good, don’t get us wrong, but we couldn’t really feel a measurable improvement… an “Ultra-ness” if you will. However, gamers want what they want and we are pretty sure that some will love the new AeroActive Portal and the LPDDR5X module, even if it’s just for bragging rights. We did not find the MediaTek chip to be inferior in any way in real-life use and if we had to choose whether we want to use the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate or ROG Phone 6 Pro — we’d honestly just throw a dart. Or just choose between Space Gray and Storm White. Now, the 6D Ultimate does come with an AeroActive 6 cooler bundled in, so if the package price is lower than buying the ROG Phone 6 Pro and the fan separately, we’d recommend the Ultra. Simply because we find the ROG Phone experience to be at its best when you have the cooler as well. And, of course, some markets in the world will only get one or the other.

Asus and MediaTek have proven that flagship gaming phone power isn't a one-horse, Qualcomm race with the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate. A reimagining of the excellent 6 and 6 Pro and launching alongside both. With a new heat dissipation system, the phone games cooler than anything we've tested. Also packing excellent speakers, a mighty screen, and a fun, gaming-optimized UI. While the camera isn't going to blow you away, for a gaming phone, the 6D hits its mark.

If it has been Asus' strategy to diversify the chip supplier and have an equally good ROG phone made with MediaTek silicon, well, they've succeeded. We don't think anyone would notice the subtle differences between the two phones. It's impressive to think that MediaTek is closing the gap on Qualcomm when it comes to flagship chipset performance. But the extra overclocking and cooling ingenuity it took on Asus' part also highlighted that the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipsets remain class-leading. MediaTek won't be breathing on Qualcomm's neck just yet - at least not this year. With all the extra work that Asus has put into making the ROG Phone 6D Ultimate, we'd say users will be happy with either flagship ROG phone. You might have your preference, but we'd say - go for whichever is more easily available near you or with whichever one is cheaper. They are both really good.
