Asus ProArt Display PA27JCV: Professional 5K monitor costs nearly half as much as the Apple Studio Display, but has limitations
Asus' new PA27JCV monitor is likely to appeal to creative workers who are looking for a large, color-accurate and high-resolution display. At least from the customer's point of view, Asus certainly appears to be targeting customers who are considering an Apple Studio Display and want to save money in the process. The PA27JCV is currently priced at $799, which, compared to the $1,499 of the Apple Studio Display, is much cheaper. However, there are certainly differences in terms of features, as the Apple Studio Display comes with a webcam with a resolution of 12 MP, microphones and six loudspeakers, and can thus be used for video conferencing right out of the box. Such features are completely lacking on the PA27JCV, although this can be easily rectified by connecting devices and peripherals via the inbuilt USB 3.2 hub.
The 27-inch Asus ProArt Display 5K PA27JCV comes with a resolution of 5,120 x 2,880 and is said to fully cover the DCI-P3 color space; the Calman-verified display reportedly has a color deviation of Delta E less than 2. Unsurprisingly, it is not a gaming monitor, as the refresh rate is a maximum of 60 Hz and the gray-to-grey response time is 5 milliseconds. Image signals can be input via HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 1.4 or USB-C, and USB PD can be used to transmit up to 96 watts back to the image source, but the model does not have such a large number of image inputs. The USB hub is equipped with four ports and a KVM switch is available. In addition to the ergonomic stand, the equipment also includes an ambient light sensor.
Those who are not entirely satisfied and are looking for comparable monitors are advised to take a look at the Samsung ViewFinity S9 at Amazon.
