We would have preferred the RAM in dual-channel configuration, as this will have an effect on performance in some areas. But with 16GB included, you won’t be having RAM-related issues for the foreseeable future, and there’s room for upgrade too. The lack of a SSD is another slight performance drawback, although at least the supplied hard disk has a healthy 1TB capacity – plenty of room for games downloads and a media collection.

The Asus ROG Strix GL702VT is a solid gaming laptop. It's lighter than most other 17-inchers and it offers solid performance and and excellent display, while remaining price competitive. Potential buyers will have to live with some of its shortcomings though, like the high-case temperatures under load and the somewhat poor battery life.

Slim gaming laptop. Asus packs a lot of gaming power into a slim 17.3-inch notebook. Even so, the laptop does not produce too much noise or heat. Due to the deactivated integrated GPU, the laptop consumes more power while idling than necessary.
Asus Strix GL702VM-GC020T
The Asus Strix GL702 is truly a gamer’s wish come true. Gone are the days where gaming laptops bear mammoth and bulky forms. Asus newest offering is a gaming machine, which the Taiwanese manufacturer describes as “compact and potent”. At first glance, it is hard to believe that the GL 702 is a gaming rig. Its dimensions measure at 415 x 280 x 22~24 mm and it weighs barely 2.7 kg. This makes the Strix the ultimate platform for gaming on-the-go. Its slimness and sleekness may be deceiving; yet, its build is sturdy and robust. The Strix has a aluminium-plastic black exterior with orange accents on logos, the trackpad and the keys. The tactile gaming keyboard is clearly designed for gaming. The anti-ghosting keys increase the precision of the commands even when multiple keys are hit simultaneously. The keyboard also features the exclusive Overstroke technology, a stylish red backlight, a key travel of only 1.6 mm. The Asus Strix GL702 is equipped with a 17-inch panel with 178° ultra-wide viewing angle technology. Furthermore, gamers can choose between Full HD or 4K UHD resolution. Gamers are also offered more screen and less bezel, thus increasing users with a wider viewing experience. Nvidia’s G-SYNC technology greatly reduces lag, minimizes frame rate stutter, and eliminates visual tearing and thereby providing gamers with richer visuals.
Performance-wise, this machine is powered by a 6th generation Intel Core i5 dual-core processor combined with a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics with full Microsoft DirectX 12 support. The Strix GL702 is also fitted with 8 GB of DDR4 RAM. This meets a wide array of users’ needs from heavy gaming to productive multitasking including live streaming and video editing. Users have the option to boost the ROG Strix GL702 with up to a SATA 2 TB 2.5' HDD of storage space and 32 GB of RAM. It’s readiness for VR technology guarantees gamers of an immersive virtual reality experience. Its cooling system is equally impressive as it is integrated with a compact hyper-cool, triple-copper thermal module which uses heat pipes and three fans to increase CPU and GPU performance. Connectivity options consist of USB 3.1 Type C port, USB 3.0 ports, and a Thunderbolt port. Mounted on board is a webcam and this is complemented with noise-cancelling microphones. Sound quality is rich and audible as it is engineered by Icepower. Networking is supported by both WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. It comes pre-installed with Windows 10 Home. The Asus Strix GL702VM-GC020T is clearly a gaming laptop that targets more normal users. While the ROG series takes on the heavyweight champions from Alienware, MSI and Razer, the Strix is made to take on normal consumer-level gaming laptops such as the Dell Inspiron 15. In some way, these machines are better than the hardcore gaming laptops because they can actually be used as a laptop.

There’s little headroom for VR and future-proofing, it’s ergonomically middling, and it doesn’t have the features or power of pricier rivals. That said, the GTX 1060, solid Full HD screen and decent components elsewhere mean the GL702VM is an excellent and affordable gaming laptop.

This machine is inevitably built with compromise in mind, but the Asus gets it right in key departments. The GTX 1060 is an excellent mid-range GPU, the screen has the ideal resolution and G-Sync alongside decent quality, and the processor is capable.

Hot stuff! The Asus GL702VS is one of many options for gamers hunting power in a portable package. Equipped with high-end components in a relatively thin and light chassis, the notebook brings high details in modern titles without breaking backs. Can the device keep its cool, or will it melt under pressure?
Source: Laptop Media

To sum things up, if you are aiming for portability, want the latest Kaby Lake Core i7-7700HQ on board and probably a better 120Hz screen, the GL702VS is the way to go but if for some reason the four RAM slots are essential to you along with the two M.2 PCIe NVMe SSD slots, a better cooling system is a must and the input devices are also of great importance, you’d better go for the G752VS.

ASUS continues to perform a nice work on the material and design of its GL702VM. If we had to nitpick, we think the palm rest is a tad big for our liking but overall quality is top notch. Its 17.3-inch display which carries a 4K resolution panel is a joy to play or watch on and its dual speakers can really deliver loud volume.

My original assumption stays true: to get ASUS ROG GL702VM-DS74, one must have deep pockets. But if one has such pockets he will surely get a beast of a laptop. Any game already released or that will be released this or next year will be a smooth sail for this ASUS to run. You might not even need to upgrade it ever (mainly the memory), so solid is the performance right out of the box. The large and sharp screen will make gaming sessions a happy experience. If you can overlook the bad battery there is very little reason to complain about anything. A serious gamer should go for such a serious gaming laptop!

Sensation. While AMD's Ryzen architecture has already been available in the desktop range for several months, the notebook range had to wait patiently for a long time. The waiting is over now: Asus is the first manufacturer who provided us with a gaming laptop with 8-core CPU and Radeon RX 580. Our review will reveal whether the bundle is able to challenge a combination of Intel and Nvidia hardware.

Such has been the dominance of Intel over a couple of generations now that the majority of gaming laptops that come through the OC3D offices run a combination of an Intel laptop-spec quad core and then an nVidia GPU that fits whichever price point the laptop arrives at.

The Strix GL702ZC indeed presents a high value proposition if you’re after the most overall performance for your money. Its AMD Ryzen 7 1700 eight-core chip makes it a beast of a machine for grunt work like encoding and rendering. It did just fine in our gaming benchmarks, too; the Radeon RX 580 inside this unit was on par with the Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 in competing laptops.

All this laptop had to do is compete with similarly priced Intel offerings, and it certainly did. It beats Intel in the multi-tasking and rendering, and it’s almost as fast when it comes to gaming. Throw in a few bonus features like an LED lit keyboard, punch speakers, impressive cooling, robust connectivity, and FreeSync, and you’ve got a great value for money bundle. It’s not as light and mobile as some may desire, but few 17.3-inch display laptops are, if any!

Very power-hungry. The Asus ROG Strix GL702ZC can run all the latest games smoothly on its matte screen. The laptop comes equipped with a Ryzen 5 1600 hexa-core processor, a Radeon RX 580 GPU and a hybrid drive. This entry-level model forgoes an SSD.

Packing a punch. With its quad-core CPU and high-end GeForce GTX 1080 GPU, the ROG Strix GL702VI handles even the latest generation of graphically-intensive games with relative ease. The dual fans have no problem keeping the heat in check, but overall system performance lags slightly behind the competition.

So is it worth your hard-earned money? As always – it depends. If you are looking for solid cooling performance, excellent image quality and portability, the GL702VI will probably be your best shot. However, the Predator 17 X can still offer an excellent UHD or FHD panel but won’t be able to drive all those pixels at 120 Hz. It also does a great job of cooling down the hardware, feels more premium, offers better upgradability in terms of storage and RAM, and offers overclockable CPU for the enthusiasts. And as for the Alienware, it’s more in between but fails to really beat any of the above mentioned in any aspect, except build quality.

Asus: ASUSTeK Computer Inc. is a major Taiwanese computer hardware manufacturer based in Taipei, founded in 1989. Under the Asus brand name, the company manufactures a wide range of products, including laptops, desktops, motherboards, graphics cards, monitors, smartphones and networking equipment, complete systems and PC components for end users.
Under the ROG (Republic of Gamers) brand name, ASUS manufactures gaming laptops known by gamers for their powerful specifications, dedicated graphics cards, high refresh rate displays and advanced cooling systems.
Beyond gaming, a wide range of notebooks are offered for different needs and budgets, from ultra-slim and lightweight ultrabooks to versatile 2-in-1 convertibles and budget-friendly options. In 2023, Asus had a 7% global market share of the PC market.
Customer satisfaction with ASUS notebooks concerns performance, the features, and the good price-performance ratio of ASUS notebooks. However, as with any brand, there are occasional reports of problems such as overheating, driver compatibility, or build quality issues.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M:
Second fastest high-end graphics card based on the Maxwell GM204 chip from the GeForce GTX 900M series.
With these GPUs you are able to play modern and demanding games fluently at medium detail settings and HD resolution.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 Mobile: The mobile GTX 1060 is based on the GP106 chip and offer 1280 shaders. Compared to the identically named desktop version it features a slightly lower clock rate. Games in Full HD and maximum details should run fluently on the card.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 Mobile: Pascal based high-end mobile graphics card based on a cut down GP104 (like the GTX 1080) and GDDR5 graphics memory. Successor to the GTX 980M with a 10 Watts higher TDP. Similar to the desktop GTX 1070 performance wise, but with more shaders and lower clock speeds.
AMD Radeon RX 580 (Laptop): Polaris 20 based high-end graphics card for laptops, manufactured in an improved 14nm process (LPP+). Should be similar to the desktop Radeon RX 580 and perform similar to a RX 480.
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 Mobile: Pascal based laptop graphics card using GDDR5 graphics memory. Should offer a similar performance to the deskto GTX 1080. However, there is also a more power efficient "Max-Q" version that performs worse than the normal GTX1080 and is used in thin and light laptops.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
6700HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Core i5:
6300HQ: Skylake-based quad-core processor for notebooks. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 530 GPU and is manufactured in 14 nm.
Intel Kaby Lake:
i7-7700HQ: Quad-core notebook processor based on the Kaby Lake architecture. Besides four CPU cores (including Hyper Threading), the chips also integrates the HD Graphics 630 GPU and is manufactured in an improved 14 nm process.
AMD Ryzen 7:
R7 1700: Desktop 8-core CPU based on the Zen architecture. Clocks with 3 to 3.75 GHz (XFR) and offers SMT (16 threads). Fastest Ryzen CPU at launch in early 2017.
AMD Ryzen 5:
R5 1600: Desktop hexa-core processor and second fastest Ryzen 5 behind the 1600X at the launch in 2017. Maximum clock of 3.6 GHz and provides good application performance.

» To find out how fine a display is, see our DPI List.
2.7 kg:
With this weight, a laptop is rather heavier than average. Devices in this range shine more with screen size and performance than with mobility.
3.2 kg:
A laptop with this weight is comparatively heavy and less designed for mobility than for use at the desk. Therefore, the devices tend to shine less with battery life than with a large screen and higher performance.
79.48%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
