Asus GL552JX-DM120
Beautifully simplistic in design, the Asus GL552JX-DM120 is a full specification gaming laptop that doesn't look aggressive and gimmicky. Inspired by a stealth fighter, the laptop comes in dark grey and houses a full sized backlit keyboard that is ultra-responsive. The Asus GL552JX-DM120 also has easy-access for instant upgrades with a bottom hatch held in by screws. When it comes to gaming, it is the inside that matters and the device certainly delivers. The Windows 8.1 system comes with an Intel Core i7-4720HQ processor, up to 16 GB DDR3L SDRAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M with either 2 GB or 4 GB DDR3 VRAM. As with most gaming laptops, each individual specification can be customized by the end user. Storage on the laptop is no different with several options ranging from 500 GB HDD to a 1.5 TB HDD combining with either a 128 GB SSD or 256 GB SSD, both in M.2 standard. There are several display options with all being 15.6 inch in size either in HD, Full HD or IPS FHD. Other capabilities include an optical drive with Blu-Ray DVD Combo to a Blu-ray writer options, a card reader, a HD webcam, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI out and a VGA/Mini D-sub combo port. Audio quality is good with SonicMaster technology and the Asus GL552JX-DM120 comes with a 4-cell battery pack rated at 3200 mAh.Specifications

The laptop isn't designed to be carried around all the time (although there's nothing stopping you from doing that) and battery life is pretty weak too. Other than these two factors though, it performs well in gaming, if you don't have very high expectations. It also has a very good anti-glare screen, looks stylish, and is upgradeable. We strongly recommend adding another stick of RAM and an SSD for better overall performance if you do plan on getting it, but then again this will push the price up by quite a bit. Also, given how quickly Asus refreshes its lineup, we wouldn't be surprised to see a Skylake version of the GL552JX in the near future.

Our first opinion on the notebook stays the same – it looks like a ROG device, but doesn’t leave the same impression. The build quality isn’t what we are used to seeing on a ASUS ROG notebook – the plastic feels cheap (except for the interior, the interior feels pretty nice), it’s heavier (2.6 kg) and bulkier than most of its competitors with even more powerful hardware, and finally the lid bends too much when the smallest amount of pressure is applied. The touchpad is also awful with the wobbling effect getting in the way all the time. It makes it a challenge when using the left and right mouse buttons. At least the keyboard is good with the right amount of key travel and tactile feedback.

Asus GL552JX-CN154H
The Asus GL552JX-CN154H is a solid gaming laptop with impressive hardware and compactness. Overall design is edgy yet not over the top. The lid is textured and features a brushed metal inlay and the Asus branding. The dark-grey colour scheme is accentuated by red highlights. The Asus GL552JX-CN154H comes with a comfortable keyboard with superior response. Asus also opted to make upgrades easy with a slide-off panel. Depending on the model, the Windows 8.1 system comes with a beautiful 15.6 inch 16:9 HD, Full HD or IPS FHD panel, but either option will serve gamers well. There are two processor options; an Intel Core i7-4720HQ or an Intel Core i5-4200H processor support by DDR3L 1600MHz RAM up to 16 GB in total. Graphics on the Asus GL552JX-CN154H is a powerful NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950M with either 2 or 4 GB VRAM. There is a huge selection of internal storage devices ranging from 1 TB HDD to 256 GB SSD in M.2 format. Other features include an optical drive, a card reader, Bluetooth 4.0, two USB 3.0 ports, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI out and Mini-DisplayPort. Gaming with limits. The Asus slogan for the new 15-inch ROG device is "Gaming Without Limits", which is unfortunately not the case because of the GeForce GTX 950M. If the limited performance is sufficient for you, you get a well-balanced multimedia notebook with an SSD, great input devices and a convincing display for 1,200 Euros (~$1354), which is, however, not without some flaws.

All things considered, the ROG GL552JX offers a well-balanced set of features and performance at its selling price – which is rather attractive. It's not the best gaming laptop out there, but at its offer price it's a recommendation worthy deal for sure, if you're looking to have a gaming laptop that dresses the part as well.

The Asus ROG GL552 doesn't scream as fast as some of its Republic of Gamers siblings, and the cheaper build quality feels flimsier, but it's still capable of punching through the latest games with relative ease. Still, it's mighty expensive at £1199.99, the plastic chassis doesn't scream quality to us and the abysmal battery life will keep you tethered to a wall. It’s a hard sell as there are cheaper, much more powerful portable options out there.

As expected, buying the more expensive notebook here, the Lenovo Y50, will bring you better performance and overall user experience due to the excellent build quality, design and superb sound. On the contrary, the GL552 excels in other important areas like screen quality and cooling system which is a big deal to consider when you add up the price tag. But keep in mind that the screen quality comes at a price as our tests indicate the presence of PWM (screen flickering) across all brightness levels except 100%. The same applies for the Lenovo Y50, but the frequency of the emitted light there is 21.6 kHz and can be considered way less harmful to your eyes.

Asus GL552VW-DH71
The Asus GL552VW-DH71 can be described as a laptop that is between multimedia and gaming laptop. We say in between, because with the power that it is housing it is possible to play games but not in high settings, we say it is multimedia because it allows web surfing, editing photos, and even some video editing. This model has an Intel Core i7-6700HQ 2.6GHz Skylake processor and a GeForce GTX 960M with 2 GB VRAM from Nvidia supported by 16 GB of RAM and provides a 1 TB HDD as storage device. Besides the choice of storage, the rest seems to be fine. Users can opt for an M.2 SSD, but it doesn't come as a default. Thus, users have to buy it separately and replace the existing drive. At least access to the inner components is easy and can be done by the user. Considering the starting of price of 1000 USD, it is obvious that some cuts had to be made. While the hardware is powerful, it is the outside where some trade-offs have been made. The screen is a nice matte IPS panel that has a 1920x1080 pixels resolution and good viewing angles. What it lacks is a quality lid. This series has 2 different type of lids one is plastic and the other one is an aluminium mixture. The plastic cover is something that you would want to handle with care as it wiggles with each keystroke you make and is easy to scratch. The aluminium lid is a bit stronger, but still feels weak. The keyboard features a red backlight and it might get some time getting used to it, since the key distance is low and ROG keyboards are mostly aimed at gamers. From a multimedia perspective, it can be argued how important it is to have a DVD writer these days and this model features one. Other than that the user gets:- 1 x Microphone-in/Headphone-out jack
- 1 x USB 3.1 TYPE C port(s)
- 2 x USB 3.0 port(s)
- 1 x USB 2.0 port(s)
- 1 x RJ45 LAN Jack for LAN insert
- 1 x HDMI
- 1.2 MP Webcam
- casual gamers
- users looking for a good desktop replacement
- good price / performance ratio
- does not get too warm
- good screen
- lacks a good screen lid
- sound output is not that great
- can't be considered a mobile companion as the battery capacitiy is small
- comes with pre-installed software from Asus

Clearly, Asus ROG GL552VW seems to be an upgrade for the company's previous gaming laptop models, specifically the Asus ROG GL552JX. It has all the power an average gamer can ask for in a PC laptop. It also is one of the options that users might want to consider given the Rs 82,490 price tag. Similar specifications can be found on the Dell's new Alienware 15 laptops as well but they are likely to cost you an arm and a leg.

With such features, it is surprising that the laptop doesn’t really heat much under load. The top middle part of the keyboard gets warm up to 45 degrees Celcius, and that is all. The battery life is decent but if you want to game, make sure you have a wall socket nearby.

The Asus RoG GL552 is a more affordable, lower-spec take on the RoG G752, which is one of the best gaming laptops money can buy right now. Any resemblance is mostly visual, though. Superficial parts of the build are worse, the screen is nowhere near as good and the trackpad is typical slightly annoying Windows laptop fodder. It’s definitely not the perfect laptop. However, in terms of providing a solid gaming experience for your cash, it’s a decent buy. The GTX 960M GPU hits the sweet spot, where it cam handle demanding games at reasonable settings without costing as much as a second-hand car. One you’d actually want to drive, anyway. Screen quality is a sticking point at this price. Apparently £900 isn’t enough to have an IPS screen, even though previous GL552 models (and current ones in other countries) use such a panel. So if you see a different version of the GL552 with an IPS screen, it's likely to be a better buy than this exact one.

While performance is about what you would expect given the specifications, it's clear that a few corners have been cut to get its price down to £1,000. Unfortunately, that happens to be the display, which is mediocre at best. The matt, 15.6in display has a standard 1,920x1,080 resolution, but its contrast is terrible, measuring just 357:1. This is due to a combination of very high 0.64cd/m2 black levels and a low maximum brightness of 230.9cd/m2. Taken together, it all makes for a rather washed out, dull and lifeless display.

With a faster hard drive, more colorful display and better-looking chassis than its direct competitors, the Asus ROG GL552 is the sub-$1,000 gaming laptop to beat. If you're looking to save money, the $800 Dell's Inspiron 15 7000 provides similar frame rates and longer battery life, but slower overall performance and a less-vibrant display.

The Asus GL552VW performs well and runs cool and quiet in pretty much every situation. The IPS screen on this top end configuration is also a pleasure to look at. On the other hand, the design and especially the build-quality are a step backwards when compared to the the older G-series 15-inchers, or the competition available today, plus the keyboard and trackpad need a breath of fresh air. If you decide to get one of these though, make sure you pick the version with a metallic lid-cover, the plastic variants are poorly built.

We've come full circle, and what was the question? Ah, yes, can one of industry's most recognisable brands nail the gaming laptop? The answer is almost, but not quite. At £875, the Asus Republic of Gamers GL552VW promises plenty but falls short in one or two key areas.

This is a sub-£1,000 gaming machine, however, whose key components aren't cheap. But the budget doesn’t stretch forever, which means the GL552VW suffers from issues elsewhere. The memory is single-channel, the SSD is inconsistent, and the speakers disappoint. Ergonomically, too, there are problems – the good keyboard is undermined by the trackpad. The biggest problem, though, is the screen: its terrible contrast impacts on every department, with insipid-looking games that serve up indistinct dark areas and a lack of punch where colour should be bursting from the panel.

W hen it comes to gaming laptops, it’s hard to look past the landslide of releases from MSI and Aorus – it seems that every other month they’ve released the umpteenth version of their most popular models. Yet Asus tends to stick to more productivity and consumer focused laptops, which is why the GL552 sparked our interest. Wearing the prestigious Asus Republic of Gamers brand that we’ve come to associate with premium-priced products, it’s a gaming laptop with a remarkably low price point. Considering the RoG branding, that immediately seems a little weird, but let’s see what’s in store at this price point.

As we said earlier, it’s hard to assess the notebook given the fact that the new G552VW is actually the GL552VW. On American soil, the laptop sells under the GL552VW name while in Europe the notebook is known as a successor to the G552. The latter, unfortunately, is further from the truth. The G552VW costs, at least, €150 more than the GL552VW but doesn’t offer anything in return. The lid gets an aluminum overhaul, but the rest of the chassis remains the same – flexible plastic and not enough sturdiness. We kind of miss the aluminum chamfered edges from the old G551. It’s definitely a step down in terms of design and build quality. Also, the old touchpad (of the G551) felt kind of sturdier, more reliable.

The ASUS GL552 is a budget-oriented gaming notebook, part of the premium Republic of Gamers lineup, that hooked us for its really lucrative price-to-performance ratio. A lot of things changed since the last generation (you can read our in-depth review here). ASUS has bumped up the specs to a new quad-core Skylake CPU – Core i7-6700HQ, that should bring a marginal increase in performance and a little improvement over in the battery department. Also, the CPU is now accompanied by DDR4 RAM and GeForce GTX 960M instead of the GTX 950M, and the latter is really a huge deal. The higher-end GTX 960M offers a lot more horsepower under the hood and, of course, GDDR5 VRAM instead of DDR3 in the GTX 950M. This will result in a great performance leap over the last generation GL552, but the price gets an “update” as well, the GPU being the main reason for that.

The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
4720HQ: Haswell-based quad-core processor clocked at 2.6 GHz with Turbo Boost support up to 3.6 GHz. Offers an integrated HD Graphics 4600 GPU and a dual channel DDR3 memory controller.
