Asus ExpertBook L1 L1401CDA in review: Quiet office notebook for a small budget

Asus' ExpertBook L1 is a 14-inch notebook that is primarily aimed at business customers and educational institutions. However, the price level also makes the device interesting for private users: For about 330 Euros (~$350), you can get a package consisting of a Ryzen 3-3250U APU, 8 GB RAM, 256 GB SSD and Windows 10 Pro (an upgrade to Windows 11 is possible). The competition includes computers like the Lenovo IdeaPad 3 14ITL6, the Dell Inspiron 15 3505 and the Acer Extensa 15 EX215-54.

Case & Equipment - Asus computer offers USB-C
Asus relies on a material mix of metal (lid back) and plastic (base unit) for the matte-black case of the L1. The gaps are correct and sharp edges are not noticeable. The base unit and the lid can be twisted, but the whole thing is still within limits. The battery (screwed, not glued) and the other innards are accessible after removing the base unit. Positive: The built-in webcam (0.9 MP, max. 1280 x 720 pixels) has a mechanical cover.
The laptop has three USB-A ports (1x USB 2.0, 2x USB 3.2 Gen 2) and a USB-C slot (USB 3.2 Gen 2). Too bad: The latter does not support Power Delivery or Displayport via USB-C. In total, the notebook has two video outputs (1x HDMI, 1x VGA). A memory card reader (MicroSD) is optionally available; the review sample does not have one.
The WLAN transfer rates determined under optimal conditions (no other WLAN devices in the vicinity, short distance between notebook and server PC) are good.

Input devices - The key illumination should be brighter
The flat, smooth keys of the chiclet keyboard have a short stroke and a clear pressure point. The keyboard yields slightly during typing. It did not prove to be annoying. The computer has a key illumination, which offers a relatively low brightness. All in all, Asus delivers a keyboard suitable for everyday use here.
A multi-touch capable ClickPad (about 10.5 x 6.2 cm/~4.1 x 2.4 in) serves as a mouse replacement, whose smooth surface makes it easy for the fingers to glide. The pad has a short stroke and a clear pressure point. A finger tap in the upper right corner of the pad causes a number pad to appear on the pad (NumPad).
Display - Asus L1 brings an adequate, not an outstanding screen with it
Brightness (244.4 cd/m²) and contrast (413:1) of the matte 14-inch screen (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) turn out much too low - no surprise considering the price level of the computer. We consider values beyond 1,000:1 or 300 cd/m² to be good. Some of the competition scores better: The Ideapad has a fairly bright display on board. Positive: The panel of the L1 does not show PWM flickering at any brightness setting.

The screen displays the colors quite poorly in the state of delivery: With a deviation of 7, the target (DeltaE < 3) is clearly missed. The display cannot reproduce the AdobeRGB (36%), sRGB (52%) and DCI-P3 (35%) color spaces. Thus, the panel is not made for application scenarios that rely on color fidelity. The competitors do not look any better in this respect.

Performance - ExpertBook relies on Ryzen APUs
The office notebook from Asus targets both private and professional users. Asus relies on AMD APUs from the Picasso generation within the series. According to the Asus website, variants with a Ryzen 5-3500U APU are available in Germany in addition to models with a Ryzen 3-3250U APU. The price ranges between 330 and 600 Euros (~$350 and ~$530, depending on the configuration).
Test conditions
The notebook has two manufacturer-specific fan modes ("standard mode", "whisper mode"), which can be switched between via the key combination "Fn" + "F". The test was performed with "standard mode" active. The "Whisper mode" reduces the operating noise under load significantly - at the expense of the computing power and in favor of a higher heat development.

Processor
The CPU part of the Ryzen 3-3250U APU (Picasso) consists of a dual-core processor that operates with a base clock of 2.6 GHz. An increase up to 3.5 GHz is possible via Turbo. Simultaneous multithreading (two threads per core) is supported.
The multi-thread test of the Cinebench R15 benchmark is processed with 3.3 to 3.4 GHz, the single-thread test with 1.6 to 3.5 GHz. In battery mode, the CPU runs at 2.4 to 3.4 GHz (multi-thread) and 1.6 to 2.4 GHz (single-thread). The CB15 loop test confirms a permanent use of the CPU Turbo.

System performance
The smoothly running system provides enough computing power for office and Internet applications. The PCMark results are good. However, part of the performance remains unused because the working memory (8 GB, DDR4-2400, onboard) only runs in single-channel mode. Installing a second memory module would have a positive effect - especially on the graphics performance.
The transfer rates of the available memory lag behind the values of the memory of the Intel-based rivals. The reason: The Ryzen 3 APU supports a maximum of DDR4-2400 memory, the Intel CPUs of the competition support DDR4-3200 memory.

Mass storage
Asus equips the ExpertBook with a PCIe-3 SSD (M.2-2280) from Western Digital, which offers a storage capacity of 256 GB. The transfer rates are good, but it is not one of the top SSDs. The notebook offers space for a 2.5-inch storage medium. Mounting frame, screws and SATA slot are included.

Graphics card
If you disregard short performance drops, the Radeon RX Vega 3 GPU can maintain its maximum clock (1200 MHz) permanently - the Witcher 3 test reveals that. The Asus L1 is not a gaming notebook. Nevertheless, it can handle frugal games, such as Dota 2 Reborn, Sims 4 or Diablo 3. Smooth frame rates are achieved at low resolutions and low quality settings. More is possible when dual-channel mode is active (= installation of a memory module) (see comparison tables).
