Aptoide Games launches on the Google Play Store in the US following Epic v. Google court rulings, offering direct downloads via the Play Catalog Access Program.

Independent marketplace Aptoide announced that its specialized gaming storefront, Aptoide Games, has been approved for distribution through the Google Play Store in the United States. The move marks the platform's return to Google Play more than a decade after policies banning competing app stores effectively forced its removal.

Play Catalog Access Program and Epic lawsuit impact

The return follows legal remedies stemming from the Epic Games v. Google litigation and the antitrust rulings issued by U.S. District Judge James Donato. Under Google's Play Catalog Access Program, eligible third-party marketplaces can now integrate with Google Play infrastructure in the U.S. while continuing to operate as independent storefronts.

Rather than requiring users to manually download APK files and enable unknown installation sources through a web browser, Aptoide Games can now be downloaded directly from the Google Play Store like any standard Android application.

Regional limits and ecosystem requirements

The Play Store distribution model is currently limited to users in the United States. Outside the country, Aptoide and other third-party stores still rely on standard Android sideloading, meaning users must download an APK directly and manually enable installation from unknown sources, since Google's catalog-sharing program does not extend beyond U.S. borders.

Participating third-party stores must also clear Google's safety and policy review process before joining the program and pay a service fee to cover onboarding and ongoing catalog access, reported at $5,000 for initial review and the same amount annually to maintain it. App downloads routed through the Play Catalog infrastructure remain subject to Google's standard platform service fees regardless of which storefront initiated the install.

Aptoide, founded in 2009, says it serves around 25 million monthly active users worldwide and offers more than 400,000 Android applications, with the U.S. as its largest market. The company previously distributed through Google Play in Android's early years before being pushed out by policy changes restricting competing app stores.
