Introduced over a decade ago as a free way to upload recent photos, My Photo Stream lost the ability to upload content at the end of last month as Apple will shut it down on July 26th. Thankfully, all users can easily switch to iCloud Photos or even various third-party alternatives.

My Photo Stream arrived alongside iCloud back in 2011, but it has become obsolete in the meantime due to the introduction of iCloud Photos, which was introduced in 2015. Its most obvious drawback is the lack of full-resolution photo-saving capabilities, and now there are roughly two weeks left until its final demise.

Apple announced that My Photo Stream would shut down in May, and starting on June 26th, the service is no longer able to upload photos. Those who enabled iCloud Photos on all devices will not feel the transition, while those not using it yet who would like to save photos from My Photo Stream will have to follow these steps:

  • Tap Albums in Photos.
  • Go to My Photo Stream > Select.
  • Tap the photos to save, followed by Share > Save Image.

Apple also highlights that My Photo Stream photos automatically import to the library on Macs.

The photos uploaded to the service until June 26th will continue to be available in iCloud for 30 days. Obviously, the users would have access to them via any device where the service is enabled. On July 26th, all photos remaining in the users' My Photo Stream will be gone and the service will be terminated.

In addition to Apple's iCloud Photos, My Photo Stream users can use various third-party replacements. The list of alternatives includes OneDrive, PhotoSync, Google Photos, and a few others.
