Apple's iPhone 2022 lineup expected to feature periscope lens
The Oppo Reno and Huawei P30 Pro have one thing in common that could be adopted by Apple for its 2022 iPhone lineup. Having periscope lens in a mobile phone's camera setup allows for excellent image quality, so future iPhone models might finally be capable to provide 5X or even 10X optical zoom. Obviously, the quality of the resulting shots also depends on the sensor and both hardware and software processing of the data delivered by it.
According to Apple analyst Ming Chi Kuo — quoted by MacRumors — "We predict that Semco, the best Korean lens supplier, and Sunny Optical, the best Chinese lens supplier, will enter the Apple lens supply chain in 2H20 and 2021, respectively." Apple's current camera lens supplier is Genius Electronic Optical, and if Apple keeps moving forward with the periscope lens plan, this company might take a heavy blow.
Earlier reports by the aforementioned source claimed that Apple is planning to get periscope lens from Genius Electronic Optical, but it seems like that plan has changed due to some unknown reasons. However, Apple had these plans for a while, since the company has filed for periscope lens-related patents for the first time in 2016.
Since both the Oppo Reno and Huawei P30 Pro only managed to hit 5X optical zoom by using periscope lens, it would be logical for Apple to go directly up to 10X in 2022. Do you think they'll settle for just 5X? What do you expect to get from the 2022 iPhone lineup? As usual, feel free to share your thoughts with us in the comments section.
