Following the release of iOS 26 in September alongside the launch of the iPhone 17, the first major update for the current iPhone operating system is now available. The approximately 4.6 GB patch introduces, among other things, the ability to reduce transparency and to tint Apple's "Liquid Glass" to improve text readability.
The mini-player in Apple Music receives new gesture controls, allowing users to skip tracks or return to the previous track with a swipe. A new option also allows users to disable the swipe gesture on the lock screen that opens the camera app. When a microphone is connected via USB-C, its level can now be adjusted, and the storage location for voice recordings can be selected. Apple has also improved audio quality during FaceTime calls when bandwidth is limited.
To turn off an alarm clock instead of activating the snooze function, you now have to swipe instead of just touching the large button, which is Apple's response to widespread criticism of the new alarm clock design in iOS 26. The fitness app now allows you to put together your own personalized workouts.
The Apple iPad receives largely the same adjustments via iPadOS 26.1, but Apple also brings back "Slide Over", a multitasking feature that allows you to place an app on the right edge of the screen as a floating window. macOS 26.1 receives significantly fewer visible changes: Liquid Glass can now be displayed in a darker shade on Macs, while the Apple TV and hard drive icons have been redesigned.
