New information from prolific leaker Digital Chat Station (DCS) suggests Qualcomm’s upcoming flagship chip might be offered in two variants. The tipster posted on Weibo that the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 series could come with Standard and Pro options.
DCS states the two new mobile processors will both use the same third-generation architecture. They will also employ the same TSMC N2P fabrication process. The Pro, however, will feature beefier specs, including higher GPU capacities and support for LPDDR6 memory.
Qualcomm’s history with confusing product names
Qualcomm has been known for adopting a rather confusing naming strategy for its chips. The company moved from the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 to the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, and there have been reports that it will use the “Gen 5” label for a non-flagship semiconductor this year. Qualcomm risks having smartphone buyers scratching their heads by throwing a “Pro” into the mix for Gen 6.
Regardless of the chaotic naming scheme, the next-gen Snapdragon looks promising. Qualcomm’s upcoming 2+3+3 CPU layout is expected to further fine-tune efficiency and performance. In addition, using TSMC’s advanced N2P manufacturing process is expected to reduce energy consumption on the next wave of flagship phones.
