iOS 26.5.2 introduces some security fixes for iPhone users
Apple released iOS 26.5.2, iPadOS 26.5.2, and macOS 26.5.2 earlier than planned. Some of the security fixes were originally scheduled for version 26.6. Speaking to Reuters, Apple said the move was prompted by AI-assisted hacking tools that shorten the path from vulnerability to attack.

Apple distributed iOS 26.5.2, iPadOS 26.5.2, and macOS 26.5.2 on Monday. What is unusual is not the content, but the timing. Some of the included security fixes were originally planned for the upcoming version 26.6 and had already appeared in its beta releases. Apple has now moved those fixes forward and delivered them directly to all users. Speaking to Reuters, the company gave a clear reason: artificial intelligence.

Why Apple released the software update earlier

According to Apple, AI is accelerating the development of malicious tools. Once a fix becomes visible in a beta, it can reveal the underlying vulnerability. AI shortens the time attackers need to turn that information into a working exploit. Apple therefore wants to keep the window between the moment a fix becomes public and the moment it reaches users as small as possible. The company stresses that there is no indication that the vulnerabilities now fixed have already been exploited. Even so, the patches were moved up to take that window away from attackers.

Vulnerabilities fixed by the update

iOS 26.5.2 fixes more than 25 security issues. The main focus is WebKit, the browser engine behind Safari and all browsers on the iPhone. With this type of engine vulnerability, simply visiting a specially crafted website can be enough in some cases. The update also includes fixes for the kernel, the core of the OS, as well as WebRTC. Kernel flaws are serious because they sit deep in the system and can give attackers extensive privileges. Apple lists the full set of fixed vulnerabilities in its official security document.

These devices get the update

The new version is available for the iPhone 11 and newer, along with numerous iPad models ranging from the iPad Pro to the iPad Air starting with the third generation and the iPad mini starting with the fifth generation. On the Mac, the corresponding update is macOS 26.5.2. Anyone using one of these devices should install the update soon. On the iPhone and iPad, the update can be found under Settings, General, and Software Update. On the Mac, it is available through System Settings. A restart is enough, after which the protection is active.
