According to sources at Mac Otakara, Apple could be set to launch a new iPad Air 5 model, outfitted with a 5nm A15 SoC and an enhanced camera. The display and chassis may not be upgraded over the current-gen iPad Air, however.

According to Mac Otakara's supply chain sources in China, Apple might be prepping the iPad Air 5 for launch later in 2022. The upcoming midrange iPad will reportedly feature the current-gen Apple A15 SoC, along with support for 5G data and an enhanced front camera with Center Stage technology. The iPad's display and design, however, are expected to remain largely unchanged from the iPad Air (2020).

The report also matches an earlier rumor that Apple will be hosting a virtual event in March or April to announce new hardware. The iPad Air 5 will likely be announced alongside the iPhone SE 3. Unlike the iPad, the SE 3 will likely feature a major redesign, with a notched LCD display akin to the iPhone XR.

The iPad Air 5, in contrast, will likely be a much more conservative redesign. The inclusion of the powerful A15 chip, along with 5G data support means that the Air 5 could still be a good tablet pick, especially if Apple sticks with its current price structure, with entry-level iPad Airs selling for US$599.
