Apple analyst delivers good news for those waiting on an iPad mini OLED
Less than a fortnight has passed since Apple quietly refreshed the iPad mini (curr. $499 on Amazon). In summary, the iPad mini 7 is the spitting image of the ageing iPad mini 6 on the face of it. Apple has included a few hardware upgrades though, the most notable of which being an A17 Pro chipset and 8 GB of RAM.
However, the iPad mini 7 still has a few shortcomings that Apple does not mention in its product listing. For example, the new tablet features a less performant iGPU than A17 Pro-powered iPhones. Similarly, the iPad mini 7 cannot match the iPhone 15 Pro Max in early benchmark results despite featuring a larger housing that should help the chipset run cooler.
On top of that, early reports suggest that the new iPad mini's IPS panel still suffers from the same jelly scrolling issue that affected the iPad mini 6. According to Ross Young of Display Supply Chain Consultants, the next iPad mini is set to receive a substantial display upgrade in the form of an OLED panel.
Unfortunately, Young has not elaborated on this upgrade yet. With that being said, we would not be surprised if the iPad mini 8 arrived with a 60 Hz OLED panel like the rest of Apple's non-Pro products. Moreover, the infrequent release schedule of iPad mini tablets makes it difficult to predict when the iPad mini 8 will officially debut at this stage.
