Apple has started distributing watchOS 8.4 globally. The software update arrives for all Apple Watch Series devices from the Watch Series 3 onwards and is roughly a 200 MB download. According to Apple, watchOS 8.4 addresses eight security vulnerabilities and fixes a charging bug that affected some smartwatches.

Apple has rolled out watchOS 8.4, the fourth major revision to watchOS 8, which Apple introduced four months ago. However, watchOS 8.4 is also the sixth watchOS 8 version, including watchOS 8.0.1 and watchOS 8.1.1. Like iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3, watchOS 8.4 mainly focuses on addressing security issues, which we have listed below. For reference, watchOS 8.4 contains fixes for vulnerabilities, two fewer than iOS 15.3 and iPadOS 15.3.

  • ColorSync - CVE-2022-22584

    • Impact: Processing a maliciously crafted file may lead to arbitrary code execution
    • Description: A memory corruption issue was addressed with improved validation.

  • Crash Reporter - CVE-2022-22578

    • Impact: A malicious application may be able to gain root privileges
    • Description: A logic issue was addressed with improved validation.

  • iCloud - CVE-2022-22585

    • Impact: An application may be able to access a user's files
    • Description: An issue existed within the path validation logic for symlinks. This issue was addressed with improved path sanitization.

  • Kernel - CVE-2022-22593

    • Impact: A malicious application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges
    • Description: A buffer overflow issue was addressed with improved memory handling.

  • WebKit - CVE-2022-22590

  • WebKit - CVE-2022-22592

    • Description: A cross-origin issue in the IndexDB API was addressed with improved input validation.

Additionally, watchOS 8.4 fixes an issue where some chargers would not work as expected. According to Apple, watchOS 8.4 is available for all generations from the Watch Series 3 onwards. As always, the new update can be triggered on the watch directly or through the iOS Watch app. Incidentally, watchOS 8.4 is approximately a 200 MB download.

Unfortunately, watchOS 8.4 does not add any new features to Apple smartwatches. To update to watch OS 8.4, your Apple Watch must have at least 50% battery life and will only update when you recharge it. Additionally, your Apple Watch and paired iPhone must be in range of each other for the update to commence. You can continue to wear your Apple Watch while it is updating, though.
