Apple CEO John Ternus’s plans for internal overhaul include quicker launches and layoffs

Now that John Ternus has taken the reins as the new CEO of Apple, some internal changes are going to come about. The former hardware engineering chief has some ideas for how Apple should operate moving forward, and that includes faster product launches, as well as fewer layers between departments.

Mark Gurman, in his latest Bloomberg article, talks about Ternus’ ideas for a more efficient and productive workplace. Apparently, these are plans that the CEO has discussed with colleagues and involve moving away from traditional launch windows. Apple typically chooses spring and fall for major product launches, but Ternus feels that in order to stay competitive, product launches need to be quicker. The company as a whole must become more “experimental,” the CEO believes.

This could affect the launch timelines for the many new products in the pipeline. We know Apple still has a few more devices that it wants to unveil within the year, including a new OLED iPad mini, AirPods with cameras, HomePod mini 2, and Apple TV 4K, among others. Most of these are expected sometime next month.

“Everything is a lot more hands-on than it used to be. It’s hectic right now,” said one of Gurman’s sources familiar with the matter.

For improved efficiency, Ternus has apparently been advocating for a leaner organization for years. Referring to the annual headcount growth, the CEO feels Apple should slow down on hiring new people. Moreover, some of the changes already seem to be in effect as Gurman reports a number of EPMs (Engineering Program Managers) at Apple were dismissed in the last two weeks. Some of the most senior employees, as well as several program managers, were asked to find other positions internally in just two weeks. Failing that, they would be laid off this year.

As is the case with most companies using AI to replace human workers with hopes of cutting costs, Apple is reportedly exploring the same, though nothing concrete has been decided yet. Regardless, layoffs are on the cards for late this year or early next year.
