AirPods with cameras could arrive this September

Things have been kind of quiet on the AirPods front, particularly regarding the rumored camera-equipped iteration. Recently, it was reported that the project was shelved, but it looks like Apple has been making progress internally and might be ready for a launch soon.
The information comes from Mark Gurman’s latest Power On newsletter that briefly talks about the AirPods with cameras. These earbuds have been internally codenamed ‘B798’ and were the first to show up with links to a camera-based design. However, there’s another version codenamed B790 also in development that could be further along in the pipeline.
The B790 model was mentioned in the code for the second iOS 27 developer beta and, as per Gurman, is on Apple’s roadmap for this year. Earlier this month, a leaker who had supported Ming-Chi Kuo’s 2024 claims of AirPods with cameras said that the project had been suspended. Initial reports suggested that the B798 model was expected this year but then delayed to 2027. This could be the model that the leaker was referencing.
The other, possibly lower-end, model could still be on track for this year. This means there is a chance the new AirPods with cameras will be unveiled in September, alongside the new iPhones.
