EA and BioWare's live-service title, Anthem, will be shut down on January 12, 2026. Unfortunately, its single-player mode will no longer be accessible after it shuts down. EA states that the game was designed primarily for online play, which is why it won't be playable offline. Given the recent spate of job cuts in the game industry, the company also clarified that Anthem's demise has not resulted in any job cuts.
Essentially, you have between now and January 12 to experience its single-player mode, which is pretty decent. Anyone looking to play Anthem can purchase it now from the EA App or PlayStation Store. It will be pulled from the former on August 15. Strictly speaking, there's no reason for a game with both single and multiplayer elements to be pulled outright, but, of late, this has been more of the norm than the exception. And this is precisely why initiatives like Stop Killing Games are necessary.
Initially launched in 2019, Anthem received mixed reviews upon its launch and sold relatively well. It wasn't without controversy, though, as it wreaked havoc among some PS4 consoles, and some EA insiders blamed players for its lack of success. Unfortunately, it did not meet EA's sky-high sales expectations and soon faded into obscurity due to a lack of support from BioWare, who understandably had to move on to other projects.
