AMD's Ryzen Threadripper 9980X is shaping up to be a beast of a CPU and it has already topped the charts on PassMark. Early benchmarks show a 10 to 12% performance improved in single-core and 13 to 15% improvement in multi-core tests on Geekbench.

AMD’s next generation Ryzen Threadripper CPUs are inching closer to an official launch. Expected later this month (July), the lineup is popping up on various benchmarking platforms online. The Threadripper 9980X, which recently broke the record on PassMark, has now made its way to Geekbench showing similar performance uplift compared to the previous generation chip as with PassMark.

The Geekbench listing for the 64-core AMD Ryzen Threadripper 9980X was spotted by Benchleaks who shared the information on X. The listing shows a single-core score of 3,259 and a multi-core score of 28,666. The CPU was tested over an Asus Pro WS TRX50-Sage WiFi motherboard with 128 GB of RAM installed. In comparison, the Threadripper 7980X on a similar setup scored 2,882 in single-core and 24,790 in multi-core testing.

This shows around a 10% to 12% increase in single-core and around 13% to 15% increase in multi-core performance. While Geekbench is not the best indicator for real-world CPU performance, it does give an idea of where the CPU stands in comparison to other chips.

The results are in line with the recent PassMark scores putting the Threadripper 9980X at the top of the charts with a 7.7% uplift compared to the Threadripper 7980X.

AMD has shared the full spec sheet for the Threadripper 9980X and it features 64 cores, 128 threads, and is based on the Zen 5 architecture. It can boost up to 5.4 GHz and has 256 MB of L3 cache. The default TDP is 350W and it support the latest AMD Ryzen Technologies including EXPO.

AMD has not shared a release date for the new Threadripper 9000X lineup but according to the latest blog post, the Threadripper 9000WX lineup will be available starting July 23 via regional system integration partners as well as global OEMs.
