AMD unveils 96-core AI monster with enough memory for trillion-parameter models

AMD has unveiled the Threadripper Halo Station, a liquid-cooled AI workstation combining a 96-core Ryzen Threadripper PRO processor with up to two Instinct MI350P accelerators. AMD says the machine can be configured with up to four Instinct MI350P cards later.

AMD has shown off one of its most powerful first-party productivity machines so far. The Threadripper Halo Station is a gargantuan liquid-cooled workstation designed to run AI models locally. Jack Huynh unveiled the machine during AMD's keynote at IFA 2026, where the company positioned it as an alternative to the increasingly powerful deskside AI systems.

At the heart of the Threadripper Halo Station is AMD's 96-core Ryzen Threadripper Pro 9995WX, which offers 96 Zen 5 cores and 192 threads. AMD pairs it with 2 TB of unspecified (likely DDR5 with ECC) system memory and two Instinct MI350P accelerators. Each MI350P comes with 144 GB of HBM3E RAM, giving the current two-GPU configuration 288 GB of accelerator memory. AMD says it will eventually support up to four MI350P accelerators, which would increase the machine's total HBM3E capacity to a whopping 576 GB. AMD claims the Halo Station can handle AI models with more than one trillion parameters locally.

With four MI350P accelerators rated at up to 600 W apiece and a 350 W Threadripper PRO 9995WX, the Halo Station could conceivably pull north of 3 kW under full load once its memory, storage and substantial liquid-cooling system are factored in. It will be interesting to see how AMD powers it all. Nevertheless, this machine is better suited to a server room than a home office.

The most obvious Threadripper Halo Station rival is Nvidia's DGX Station, which uses a GB300 Grace Blackwell Ultra Desktop Superchip comprising a Blackwell Ultra GPU connected to a 72-core Grace CPU. The Blackwell GPU gets 252 GB of HBM3e with 7.1 TB/s of bandwidth, while the CPU has 496 GB of LPDDR5X, for 748 GB of coherent memory accessible within the system.

Nvidia's DGX Station has a tightly integrated Grace Blackwell design with 748 GB of coherent memory, meaning the CPU and GPU can work from a common memory space over its 900 GB/s NVLink-C2C connection. AMD instead combines a conventional high-end x86 workstation CPU with discrete Instinct accelerators working in tandem with a massive 2 TB of system memory. That gives the Halo Station substantially more total physical RAM. However, we can’t make an apples-to-apples comparison because Nvidia's coherent memory architecture differs from AMD’s off-the-shelf approach.

AMD has not yet revealed pricing or a launch date for the Threadripper Halo Station. With a 96-core Threadripper Pro processor, multiple MI350P accelerators and several terabytes of memory on the menu, however, this is very much an enterprise-class workstation rather than an especially ambitious gaming PC. Given the world we’re living in, a six-figure (USD) price tag seems imminent.
