An increasing number of AI generated content disclosures have popped up on Steam and as it sits now, nearly 8,000 games use some form of AI content. Some of these games are very highly rated and are selling a lot of units.

The use of generative AI for games has been increasing and a recent analysis quantifies this fact by looking at disclosures on Steam. Steam asks developers to disclose if their game uses any kind of AI generated content and since this implementation, the number has increased significantly compared to last year. The level of AI use varies from in-game artwork to complete maps.

The analysis posted by Totally Human Media last week, July 13, states that in 2024, around 1,000 games were disclosing some level of AI generation. This year, up till July, the number has jumped to nearly 8,000 titles disclosing varied levels of AI use. Steam added the option for developers to disclose if their game is using AI generated content back in January 2024 which suggests that both the number of new games that use AI and new disclosures have increased since. However, it is hard to determine which value is higher.

Furthermore, the developers while adding their game to Steam need to fill out a content survey which has an AI disclosure section, though it is not mandatory. This means there could be even more than the nearly 8,000 titles that do so.

Some of the examples of games that use AI generated content and to what extent was also shared as part of the analysis. inZOI uses AI models to allow players to “generate unique textures for character outfits and various items based on text input. They can also create 3D objects from image input, which can be used as interior decorations or accessories, and add distinctive motions to their Zoi using video input. Small language models are used to control the actions and thoughts of Zois.

Street Flicker uses generative AI to create player characters. AI Roguelite live-generates in-game content such as text, images, and sound effects as well as to make "game mechanics decisions in real time". AI Roguelite is currently sitting at 82% positive reviews.

From the looks of it, the use of generative AI is going to further increase in game development. Microsoft has admitted that up to 30% of its code is written by AI, how much of that is for gaming is unclear. The company’s generative AI model called Muse has been specifically designed to help creators with game development, be it generating new content or revitalizing older games.
