It’s a good buy as a general-purpose family tablet. But the extra cost of the Plus features bumps up the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus’s price close to that of some other brands’ Android tablets, which have access to a better library of apps and games.

Amazon's 2022 Fire HD 8 remains good at what it is designed to do: stream Amazon content. If you're a Prime subscriber and want a small, affordable device to use on the couch, in the kitchen, or even with a stand to impersonate an Echo Show, the Fire HD 8 isn't bad. But if you can afford it, the 10-inch model offers a much better overall experience and remains our top pick. If you really want to score a deal, wait for the next Prime Day to roll around, when, typically, Amazon's Fire tablets can be had for half-price.

If you're looking for a cheap tablet, the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus has a lot to offer. For just a little over $100/£100 you can do a ton of stuff: watch movies, listen to music, check emails, read ebooks, listen to audiobooks, surf the net and (of course) shop on Amazon. In short, if you want a cheap tablet for entertainment, rather than productivity, this is an excellent buy. But is it that much better than the Amazon Fire HD 8, or should you save the extra $20/£20? What about the wireless charging or faster charging generally? Neither would move the needle for me personally, but if you find charging a hassle, it might for you. So that just leaves the extra 1GB of RAM. Is that really worth the extra $20/£20? If you're the sort of person who likes to do two or three things at once, then I'd say: yes, absolutely. I found that doing things like checking email or doing a web search while watching a TV show was that little bit smoother here than the Amazon Fire HD 8. However, if you're happy doing one thing at a time – like reading an ebook or watching a movie and just focusing on that alone – you'd probably be just as happy with the cheaper tablet.

With all of the same issues and a distinct lack of improvements, it’s impossible to recommend the Fire HD 8 Plus (2022) over the cheaper standard version. All of the key areas – performance, display and battery life – are either identical or worse here, and minor changes such as the 5MP camera and 3GB of RAM don’t make enough of a difference to be worth the extra money. If you absolutely must have wireless charging, consider pushing the budget a little further and going for the Fire HD 10 Plus (2021), which starts at £180 for 32GB storage and lockscreen ads. Otherwise, save yourself some cash and go for the standard Fire HD 8 (2022): it looks and performs mostly the same, offering much better value for money overall.

If you ever wondered what tablet you should buy for casual browsing, mobile entertainment, or even for a child, and your first instinct was to search on Amazon, you're the ideal customer for the Fire HD 8 Plus. At $120, the latest model is not the cheapest of the Fire tablet bunch, but it's certainly a compelling option for its sharp visuals, enduring build quality, and exceptional battery life. The drawbacks include the lackluster camera quality and app support, and the abundance of ads should you opt for the base model. If you (or your child) don't mind those compromises, then the latest Amazon tablet is a surefire pickup.

An expensive tablet is something of a questionable purchase these days, particularly if you’re living on a tight budget, or already own a large smartphone. That’s why a super-affordable tablet like the Amazon Fire HD 8 Plus (2022) is so appealing. On paper, you get practically everything you expect from an iPad or other premium tablet for not much more than the cost of an ad-supported Netflix subscription. That comparison is rather apt, as ads are how Amazon has achieved such an absurdly cheap price point for the HD 8 Plus. But is the low cost of this budget tablet worth the tradeoffs, or has Amazon cut too many corners?

Overall, the Fire HD 8 Plus is a nifty little tablet, but you’ll really only find a use for it if you’re subscribed to Amazon Prime. At $119.99, you can think of it as a souped-up remote control for Alexa that comes with a few perks, like quick access to streaming, ebooks, and podcasts through Amazon’s ecosystem. It’s the perfect balance between the cheaper Amazon Fire 7 and Fire HD 10 tablets and, in my opinion, makes the most sense both price and feature-wise.

This display format is in the mid-range for smartphones. It offers a compromise between good visibility, details and resolution on the screen, and you can still fit it into trouser pockets.
